Summary
Lawmen: Bass Reeves attempts to juggle too much and avoids honing in on Bass himself. That said, David Oyelowo is still turning out career-best work weekly.
The bounty on Bass’s head finally comes to a head in Episode 6 of Lawmen: Bass Reeves. Although he is able to come out of the battle alive, Bass returns home to an unexpected guest who ruffles his feathers. As that happens, Sally begins to pay for the fight at the carnival. As with the rest of Season 1, David Oyelowo delivers consistent, career-best work, but as with recent episodes, this one seems to be splitting its attention too thinly in order to avoid honing in on the actual story of Bass Reeves.
Lawmen: Bass Reeves Season 1 Episode 6 Recap
Who does Bass have to give Jackson over to?
At the end of Episode 5, we saw Bass cross paths with Esau Pierce, someone he has a past with. The two share an exchange of displeasure, but it’s revealed that Bass has to pass off Jackson to Esau to take him the rest of the way to Red River.
As a result of Sally and Arthur’s fight, Arthur comes to tell Jennie that he is leaving town. She doesn’t understand why, but he explains his last name isn’t Reeves, and they will have his neck for what ended up happening. Although he asks her to go with him, she says no, but he promises to write to her every day until she comes.
Bass and Billy Crow spend the night in a town to get some rest, where Bass is struggling with the weight of the badge. A man named Braxton Sawyer approaches him for a little confrontation, but he reveals himself to be a Texas Ranger, and the two sit for a chat. Bass explains he is struggling to believe in what he is doing, but Sawyer says that many people know the good he is doing and encourages him to carry on.
What happens to Bass Reeves in Episode 6?
As Bass is outside, a woman approaches, saying, “This is the man that did Webb.” A group of men join the woman and proceed to beat Bass to a bloody pulp. She announces the bounty on him is for him dead or alive. They play a game of Russian roulette, with the first two shooting blanks, but as the third goes to shoot, Billy Crow shoots the man in the face, saving Bass.
Instead of getting looked at, Bass tells Billy Crow that they will hunt them down. The duo do so, including arresting the woman who started the commotion.
Bass comes home to Edwin Jones sitting in his chair at the dinner table and isn’t very thrilled by it. Edwin explains that he and Esme have been trying to find a safe space for their fellow Black community. He begins to question who Bass serves and whether or not he is fighting for the right side. Because of Edwin’s tone of voice, Jennie isn’t fond of the “why” of wanting to meet Bass and asks for them to go.
What happened to Jackson Cole?
Bass heads to pick up his bounty for bringing Jackson Cole to the Texas Ranger. He informs the woman that she is shory fifty dollars, but she says Jackson’s boots were delivered to Red River, not a whole man. He tells her that he brought Jackson alive to them, but the telegram says otherwise.
