Apple TV+ is known for trusting in its original content and has backed the majority of its shows in the long term. One particular show that seems to be getting preferential treatment though is the British spy series Slow Horses, which has already premiered three seasons in just two years. Apple has placed a lot of confidence in Slow Horses over the last few years, but will they be renewing the series for Season 4? The short answer is yes, Jackson Lamb will be returning once again.

Has Slow Horses been renewed for Season 4?

Official Renewal Status: Renewed

Ready Steady Cut is happy to announce that Slow Horses has been renewed for a fourth season. The comedy crime caper, based on Mick Herron’s Slough House series of novels, was renewed for a third and a fourth season long before the second season had even aired, way back in the summer of 2022.

Apple TV+ clearly has a lot of confidence in this show and has practically put their money where their mouth is on this one, ordering four seasons in quick succession. Although it doesn’t feel like that much of a gamble when you consider the fact that the series is adored by both fans and critics alike, with a star turn from Gary Oldman thrown in for good measure.

How has Slow Horses Season 3 performed?

Over the years, the critic community has been rather kind to Slow Horses. The first season garnered a Rotten Tomatoes score of 95%, whilst Season 2 eclipsed that with a rare 100% certified fresh rating. Season 3 looks set to score similar results; it currently holds a 97% score at this moment in time. And the audience rating is equally as impressive on the whole at 93%.

On IMDb, the series currently has a rating of 8 out of 10 from over 48,000 votes. These scores will have helped Apple to decide on renewals early in the show’s history, but greenlighting so many seasons, so far in advance, is quite unprecedented in the TV world.

Having said that, this show is quite the unique offering anyway, mixing espionage thrills with British sarcasm. And Gary Oldman’s star role as Jackson Lamb is easily one of the best TV performances in recent memory. This show rightfully deserves all the attention and accolades it has garnered.

What is Slow Horses Season 3 about?

Season 3 of Slow Horses is based on the third main novel in Mick Herron’s Slough House series, titled Real Tigers. It follows a team of rogue MI5 agents who are out for revenge. To kick-start their plans, they kidnap Slough House’s very own Catherine Standish (Saskia Reeves).

Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman) and his gang of disgraced former agents must work together to save Catherine’s life. As usual, their investigation into this abduction uncovers a conspiracy at the very heart of Regent’s Park, one that involves those at the very top of the pecking order too.

Season 3 sees the return of all your beloved fan favorites and the introduction of a few new characters as well. Sope Dirisu (Gangs of London) plays Sean Donovan, the leader of the rogue agents, whilst Katherine Waterston (Steve Jobs) plays Alison Dunn, an MI5 agent, who is also Sean’s lover.

What can we expect from Slow Horses Season 4?

Season 4 of Slow Horses will likely be an adaptation of the next book in the series, which is titled Spook Street. The plot revolves around River’s grandfather David Cartwright, a retired MI5 officer, and is sure to work as a stand-alone story once more, whilst interconnecting with the Slough House gang’s ongoing story arcs.

The fourth season is set to star Hugo Weaving (The Matrix franchise), Tom Brooke (The Crown), and Joanna Scanlan (The Thick of It). And as with all seasons of Slow Horses, the next one has already begun filming and will likely premiere sometime in 2024.
