Summary
The drama and danger definitely ramp up in Episode 5, while the central romance becomes even more complicated.
Well, things are heating up a little, aren’t they? Episode 5 of My Demon seems the most dangerous outing in Season 1 thus far, boasting the most complicated family drama and the closest brush with death that Do-hee has yet experienced. One mustn’t forget about the romantic backbone, either, which is making things even more complicated both personally and professionally.
So, lots to be going on with, then, and fans are no doubt delighting in it all. Thus far, at least, the pre-release anticipation around this show seems warranted.
My Demon Season 1 Episode 5 Recap
Picking up from where we left off in Episode 4, Do-hee (and her borrowed powers) and Gu-won are able to fight off the thugs. But nothing brings people together like brushes with violence, so the two start to develop closer feelings. Not that either of them is necessarily sure about it or ready to admit it, though.
When Do-hee presses their feelings by going to Gu-won’s house, he nastily dismisses her. This is not an emotionally mature demon, it seems.
Who hired the stalker?
Anyway, there’s still a stalker on the loose, and the mystery of whoever hired them to kill Do-hee is left to unpack. We know it’s someone in the family, and that the same person probably killed Madam Ju in Episode 3. Here, a couple of front-runners emerge in Do-hee’s step-brother Sok-min and his son Do-kyung, both of whom receive a message from the stalker and neither of them come across as upstanding citizens on paper.
Do-kyung, for instance, kills a psychiatrist for calling him a “lunatic”, clearly with no sense of irony, and Sok-min leans on shareholders to elect him as acting chairman. Even his wife has dreams about Madam Ju’s heart giving out. And I thought my family was a bit off.
Why does Do-hee fire Gu-won?
My Demon continues to punctuate this quite serious drama with lighter, funnier moments, like a mistaken identity scene in which Gu-won’s assistant gets smacked around after being mistaken for Do-hee’s stalker (he’s wearing a helmet). But this does seem to be falling by the wayside a little as things get more serious, and one imagines there will probably be less and less of it as we progress.
Anyway, Sok-min is indeed appointed acting chairman thanks to his efforts, reminding Do-hee of her marriage obligations, which she wants to hasten given this development. Gu-won isn’t necessarily thrilled about the idea, or her interactions with Seok-hoon, but he’s trying to have his cake and eat it at this point.
Consistently annoyed by Do-hee’s insistence on marrying a rather lecherous prospective suitor seemingly just to spite him, Gu-won sulks more and more. He eventually takes Do-hee to the gangster whose goons were after them at the start of the episode, but given his mood, Gu-won goes a little too far for their boss while holding Do-hee’s hand for power-transference purposes.
Sick of his faintly childish behaviour, Do-hee dismisses Gu-won as her bodyguard.
How does My Demon Season 1 Episode 5 end?
The fifth episode of My Demon ends with Do-hee returning home – where she’s attacked and almost killed by her stalker. Luckily, Gu-won arrives just in time to save her.
This isn’t the first time that these two have been brought closer by mortal peril, and it’s probably slightly concerning that their relationship can’t seem to flourish without some kind of danger attached. In the meantime, though, it’s probably reassuring for Do-hee, whose life seems to be even more at risk with every passing episode.
