A family books a beautiful Long Island home for a holiday, but the original owners arrive, bringing with them a portent of imminent doom, leading to tension and trauma as the events start to take a horrifying turn. However, many fans have taken to social media to express their feelings about the film’s ambiguous ending, and who can blame them? Will there be a sequel to Leave the World Behind?
At the time of writing, nobody will be surprised to read that there are no official plans to release a sequel to Leave the World Behind.
If we are being honest, a sequel to the film isn’t likely. It seems that the open-ended finale of the movie deviates from the ending that was used in the original novel, but both the film and the book end with no real answers given.
The book was released in 2020, and so far, the author has not written a sequel.
Why are viewers demanding a sequel to Leave the World Behind?
It seems that many people who were heavily invested in the film and the characters were left feeling let down by an inconclusive end to the story. There is an argument that the film could have explained a little more about the events that were happening, however, there are many people who feel that the ending was justified, and often these types of films are better for allowing the viewer to think about what happens for themselves. Not everybody needs their media spoon-fed and explained, so perhaps this is just a case of taste.

I’ve just seen Leave The World Behind on Netflix and it was such a brilliant and spectacular watch. No idea why some people say they hate the ending but it was perfect to me. I’m a sucker for cliffhanger endings. ?

How did Leave the World Behind end?
The strange events that occur in the film escalate as it moves on. It starts with the phone networks failing, and the TV and internet going down, then more dangerous situations arise when an oil tanker seems to run aground and GPS in the cars fail.
Cryptic messages are dropped from drones and startling noises are heard across the landscape. Escape is impossible, the roads are blocked by self-driving cars, and local woodland animals all make a bid to escape too. One of the characters falls ill, and eventually, bombs and gunfire are heard in New York. We are given hints that there may be a force at work deliberately trying to destabilize society, and we learn that The White House is under attack and the threat of nuclear war seems imminent.
We are left with Rose, seemingly unresponsive to the horror of the situation, locating a hidden survival bunker and preparing to watch the final episode of the sitcom Friends on DVD. Let’s hear it for physical media.
What could Leave the World Behind Part 2 be about?
The sequel would be able to provide context for the situation that is occurring, explaining the nature of the attack and the reasons behind it. It could also follow up on the characters that are left at the end of the first film, and follow their struggle for survival, but ask yourself if this is a sequel you would want to watch.
