Apple TV+ has an A-list-loaded comedy adventure movie on the platform, The Family Plan, starring Mark Wahlberg and Michelle Monaghan. It follows the story of an ex-assassin living incognito as a normal dad, who must take his unsuspecting family on the run when the ghosts from his past start to resurface. The film is a fun and action-packed family thriller that has had some mixed reviews, but the star casting and amiable appeal should make this a winner for Apple. There is no denying that it has its fans, as already there have been many wondering if there will be a continuation of the story in a potential sequel. But will The Family Plan 2 be greenlit? If it is, the director has some ideas.

Will The Family Plan 2 Happen?

At the time of writing, there has been no official confirmation of a sequel to The Family Plan, however, the cast and crew have been expressing their views in an interview with The Direct‘s Russ Milheim.

During the interview, director Simon Cellan Jones was asked about a sequel, and it seems that he had already given the idea a lot of thought. He said that the film “would definitely be a road movie” in a “crazy location like Europe or South America”. He would go on to confirm that he would want to use the same family:

“Because family never cures its problems. It just sort of puts them on hold for a while. I think they’d still be tons and tons of great material.”

The exclusive interview confirms that the director seems to feel a sequel is something that he would be on board for. This does bode well for the property, even if it is only a small detail.

What Could The Family Plan 2 Be About?

There is no doubt that the film would probably follow a similar vibe to the first, with plenty of action, adventure, and comedy, but after the first movie, the family dynamic has changed quite considerably, with the family now very aware of their dad’s background. However, this could work in the movie’s favor as it would give the new movie a fresh approach.

What could prevent a sequel from happening?

The main problem could be how well-received the first film is, both critically and among audiences.

As the film has not been out for very long, Apple TV+ will still be looking at the numbers and data about the movie, and how it has performed. Reportedly with a budget of around eighty million, Apple will be carefully looking at all the figures before green-lighting a sequel.

There is also the fact that Apple TV+ does not seem to routinely produce sequels for their properties, but the platform itself is still in its infancy, so maybe logistically there has not been much time for sequels to be completed. Speaking of logistics, there is also scheduling the shoot for the ensemble cast, which is also problematic, as I do not doubt that the director would want to reunite the original lineup.

On top of that, the younger actors will of course get older as time passes, and other work will be available for them, so if they are going to do a sequel, all these things need to be taken into account. Time will tell.
