Summary
Gyeongseong Creature heats up a little bit by exploring more of Ongseong Hospital’s horrors while furthering the romantic connection between the two leads.
Taken together, Episode 1 and Episode 2 of Gyeongseong Creature Season 1 feel a bit like a prologue to Part 1 proper. The premiere was all about introductions and setup. The second outing, “Mother”, fleshes out some of those ideas and dynamics but builds towards a more claustrophobic, action-horror-oriented premise – Chae-ok inside Ongseong Hospital, and Tae-sang trying to rescue her from whatever monstrosities are inside.
Gyeongseong Creature Season 1 Episode 2 Recap
The second episode opens with a flashback to a year prior, with Sachimoto being hired for a position at Ongseong Hospital. The place is being used to elevate the medical standards of Japan, which is a fancy way of saying it’s being used for unethical experimentation on human beings.
Sachimoto has to square the knowledge of what’s going on at Ongseong with his needs as a struggling student, and perhaps his morbid curiosity. His job is to draw the creatures produced by the experimentation, which ties in nicely to the ending of the premiere, where he was instructed to do the same thing.
Where is Myeong-ja?
In the present day, Chae-ok breaks into a Japanese command post, witnessing a document handover and following and interrogating a Japanese official, and she and her father discover that Myeong-ja was last seen with Ishikawa’s wife and may have been taken to Ongseong Hospital.
When Tae-sang’s pride is knocked a little, he resolves to help Chae-ok and Jung-won infiltrate the hospital by procuring disguises and borrowing an ID from Jun-taek. The only downside – should you want to call it that – is that Chae-ok looks so beautiful in her disguise that Tae-sang almost falls in love with her on the spot.
Chae-ok and Jung-won are able to break into the records room thanks to a distraction from Tae-sang and Gu, helped along by a guard who catches them in the act but is also quietly a member of the Korean resistance movement. We learn that he joined up because his brother was transferred to Ongseong a year prior.
What happens inside Ongseong Hospital?
The hospital is a military facility, but the basement of horrors squats underneath, and things are starting to go wrong in there. The creature is growing out of control, skewering various guards with its tentacles.
The monstrosity is evolving so rapidly that even when dosed with nitrogen it continues to protect itself by letting off deadly spores. Simply transporting the creature to a Level 4 cell, where it can presumably be kept under more control, results in many deaths.
Despite the sirens, Chae-ok and Jun-wong, who’re scoping the place outside, have no idea the extent of the horrors going on inside. The dead bodies being piled up outside are a bit of a clue, but Chae-ok nonetheless breaks in despite the commotion.
How does Gyeongseong Creature Season 1 Episode 2 end?
With Chae-ok trapped inside the hospital, which has now been closed indefinitely, Tae-sang is presented with a major decision. He can put himself first, as he always does, or he can risk it all to save the woman he has become suddenly infatuated with.
Of course, Tae-sang settles on the latter. However, the next morning, Tae-sang is stopped by one of the hospital nurses, who also turns out to be part of the resistance, who delivers a note from Chae-ok saying they have found Myeong-ja. It looks like Tae-sang will be heading inside to retrieve his new lady friend and the missing girl.
