While rumors of a renewal were floating around on Korean sites as far back as December, Netflix confirmed the renewal and plans for the show on January 8, 2024, outlining what the second season will look like after the first season’s shocking climax in an official press release on Tudum.
Gyeongseong Creature Season 2 will reinvent the show

“Season 2 presents a story with a completely different charm. The change in space and time period will provide a clear distinction, offering an expanded universe feel.”
Netflix also released a video announcement:
What viewing numbers has Gyeongseong Creature got so far?
Gyeongseong Creature has been a real sleeper hit, with the show making it into the top ten lists in many countries around the world. Netflix’s official statistics confirm the show’s popularity, and according to the official Netflix Top 10 website, Gyeongseong Creature managed to accrue a heady 3 million views and 24 million viewing hours in just three days from December 22 to December 24.
Korea JoonAng Daily reports that the show “climbed to No. 3 on the streaming service’s rankings for non-English language shows globally.”
What is the controversy over Gyeongseong Creature actor Han So Hee?
An article in KPOPPOST reveals that there was some backlash towards the show in regards to a social media post made by Han So Hee, one of the stars in the series, who responded to criticism of the series from Japanese critics about its depiction of the Japanese Army’s historical atrocities.
Han So Hee posted some shots from the show and a picture of Korean independence activist Ahn Jung Geun. She then highlighted that the story focuses on people fighting against human experimentation:

The post, translated from Korean, reads:
“This tale is about the brave individuals from a magnificent but challenging era who battled a monstrous creation from human experiments. It’s not about the romantic tales of Gyeongseong or mythical beings from the Japanese colonial period. It’s set in a spring where love was the only solace people could find amidst the turmoil.”
The post would lead to some Japanese critics accusing Han So-Hee of being anti-Japan and inconsiderate of Japanese feelings, however, the post would see her garnering support and goodwill from Koreans for her point of view and bravery.
On a less political tangent, the show also received some criticism from viewers who felt that there was little chemistry between the two leads, and as far as K-Drama goes, that can be a big letdown for viewers. We would love to know your thoughts on the show in the comments section below.
