Summary

Episodes 9 and 10 of My Demon deliver a healthy mix of both romance and drama as the real villain is revealed and the stakes for both leads are heightened.

In Episodes 9 and 10 of My Demon, a flourishing romance between the leads gives way to a more serious reveal of the real villain and stakes. While fans have waited a while for the central dynamic to come to fruition in Episode 8, there’s little time to enjoy it, though that shouldn’t come as much of a surprise given the type of show we’re dealing with here. Still, Season 1 remains engaging with its characters, lightly fantastical elements, and thickening plot, and doesn’t seem to be slowing down or suffering in quality as we progress through the back half.

My Demon Season 1 Episode 9 Recap

We do get to enjoy Gu-won and Do-hee’s romance for a little while, at least. They’re all lovey-dovey at the start of the episode, and Gu-won has his powers back, so they enjoy a little date and if you squint a bit you can see what married life between the two of them might look like. Not that everything is perfect. Soo-an is in the bushes taking pictures of them clandestinely, and Do-hee still has a fair amount of lingering trauma associated with the music the killer was playing. Gu-won is there to help her overcome it, but those things aren’t dealt with easily.

While this syrupy stuff takes up a good chunk of the episode, there is the small matter of the Mirae Group’s chairmanship to consider. Do-hee, seemingly satisfied with her life with Gu-won, wants to give up the responsibility, believing she’ll be fulfilling Madam Ju’s wish for her simply by being happy in her life. Gu-won senses this probably isn’t what she wants deep down, though, and convinces her to at least unmask her attempted killer for the sake of closure. To help, he gets the police to draw up half of the man’s face and mirror it so he can hand the visage over to his mafioso friends.

After weeks of teasing both Suk-min and Do-gyeong as the potential string-puller of the mysterious killer, it’s revealed in Episode 9 that Suk-min is the one who has been in contact with him.

With Do-hee having signed the company over and at least half of the killer’s mug now in the public domain, the murderer has now become a liability, so Suk-min does away with him. He’s subsequently found with a knife in his heart, burned to a crisp, but it’s hardly the end of the threat, since as Gu-won realizes, the real culprit is the killer’s killer.

At the end of the episode, Gu-won notices that the clocks have stopped following the gradual erosion of his powers again. When he asks the mysterious old homeless lady about this, she takes him to a fancy bar, where she wears a cap with the word “Good” printed on it, though one of the O’s has faded away. This woman, then, is God, which is a bit of a twist.

Speaking of twists, God tells Gu-won that he’s dying and that the only way to save himself is to get his tattoo back. But the only way to get his tattoo back is for Do-hee to die, which is problematic for obvious reasons. Will Gu-won be able to take that big of a gamble on not just his own life but also his wife’s?

My Demon Season 1 Episode 10 Recap

Picking up where things left off, Gu-won is in quite a predicament, fretting over how to save both himself and Do-hee despite God – yes, literally God – telling him this is quite impossible. There’s a casino-like randomness to fate and destiny, it seems, and while one makes one’s own choices, one never has full control over their outcome.

If nothing else, Gu-won has experienced some character growth. Earlier in the season, he’d have thrown Do-hee to the wolves without a second thought. Now he’s adamant about saving her, even at his own expense. Progress!

Seok-hoon isn’t necessarily inclined to see this, though, since Ga-young revealed to him that Gu-won is a demon and explains that demons have no real function other than manipulating people and sending them to hell.

Ga-young’s presence is certainly felt in Episode 10. While Gu-won plans to whisk Do-hee off to Sokcho to regain his tattoo during the full moon, an excursion she immediately – and excitedly – begins to view as their honeymoon, Ga-young rains on her parade by giving her poison and telling her that committing suicide is the only way to save her husband. Lovely.

Then there’s Suk-min and Do-gyeong and the sad strain of parental abuse running through this whole thing. Suk-min has been endlessly trying to “fix” his wayward son, though his means of doing so are a bit grim. After discovering that Do-gyeong cloned his father’s phone to figure out what he was up to, Suk-min brands his arm – and not for the first time.

Episode 10 overplays the Gu-won and Do-hee romance by delivering a montage of all their deliberately cute moments while they wait for the full moon on the beach in Sokcho. While Gu-won fills the car up, Do-hee writes a little note on a postcard for him, explaining she’ll always choose him over herself.

How does My Demon Season 1 Episode 10 end?

At the end of the episode all roads converge on Sokcho, with Do-gyeong plowing a car into the shop Do-hee is in just as Seok-hoon and Ga-young arrive. Despite the latter rather crazily suggesting he should just leave her in there to burn up to regain his demon status and powers, Gu-won heroically saves the day, carrying Do-hee to safety.

But what happens now? Is Do-gyeong dead? Will Suk-min, now the new CEO of the Mirae Group, want revenge? There’s everything still to play for in the final episodes of the season.
