Summary
Criminal Record continues to be engaging and tense, although the overarching mystery is slowly starting to lose its initial appeal, surprisingly early in the season. “Two Calls” is a little plot-heavy, weaving many interconnecting puzzle pieces, yet it still leads to an enticing twist ending.
Episode 2 of Criminal Record, titled “Two Calls,” focuses on June’s obsessive investigation into Adelaide’s death. She is convinced that the first anonymous caller was Maria and plans on connecting the same killer to both Adelaide and Maria’s deaths. Meanwhile, Daniel Hegarty takes over the Maria case, battling with June once again in Season 1’s nail-biting second installment.
Continuing where the premiere ended, we follow June as she makes her way into Maria’s flat. June is told that backup is 3 minutes away. The detective investigates Maria’s ransacked apartment and soon finds the killer, naively returning for his phone. June chases the killer into an elevator, where they engage in hand-to-hand combat. It’s a brutal opener, as June is strangled by the killer, who eventually escapes.
Who killed Maria De Souza?
In the hospital, June identifies the killer right away from photographs — he is Clive Silcox. June regrets letting him get away, but Roy promises that they will continue to search for him. The injured detective is then reunited with her partner Leo and her son Jacob. They were worried she was dead.
June is unable to rest and continues her investigation despite her orders. Daniel is placed in charge of the case, with DI Gearing’s assistance. June asks Daniel if she can interview Clive, still convinced that he is Adelaide’s killer too. Daniel and the force still haven’t found Clive though. June can’t interrogate the man just yet.
At work, June listens to the audio from Maria’s phone call, convinced that she is the same woman who anonymously called the police the first time around, talking about the wrongful conviction. June is then confronted by Professional Standards. During their audit, they discovered that June had searched eight number plates without assigning them to a specific case. Professional Standards are unaware that June was helping out her paranoid mother, but this silly mistake could land her in serious trouble.
What is the connection between Errol Mathis and Clive Silcox?
Continuing her obsessive sleuthing, June visits Errol’s mother, Doris, asking her if she knows Clive Silcox. Doris is offended by June’s questioning and orders her to leave. Sonya calls later that day, asking why June is harassing poor Doris. June admits that she is looking for connections between Clive and Errol. Sonya then informs June that Clive and Errol went to school together.
June’s obsession with the case has caused her to become aggressive and shortsighted. She worries about her actions, discussing the case with Leo at Jacob’s football game. The couple end up arguing over the case. Leo is concerned about the seriousness of June’s audit as well. June blames everything on Daniel though.

Following a new lead, June finds Clive’s hideout. He has already moved on to his next victim. June tells the police of Clive’s current location and then waits for backup to arrive. She struggles to sit and wait though, noticing a disturbance within the house. June breaks in as a fire blazes through the home. June is able to save the two women trapped inside and even stops Clive from killing himself.
After this heroic altercation, June returns to work immediately. She reads Maria’s confidential pathology report and then meets with Daniel and Gearing. Daniel is pleased to announce that Clive has confessed to the murder of Maria De Souza. June asks to interview Clive herself.
Why does June want to interview Clive Silcox?
This reignites Daniel and June’s ongoing feud. June wants to interview Clive about the murder of Adelaide, but Daniel doesn’t want that case reopening whatsoever. Daniel asks June for any meaningful reasons to reopen the case. June outlines all the connections between the two cases. Daniel doesn’t believe that the two callers were the same person though.
June brings up the results of the pathology report to strengthen her case, stating that Maria had two old stab wounds on her body. This corroborates with the statements in the first anonymous call, linking the two. Daniel is more interested in how June acquired this information though, claiming that the report was confidential. June lies, saying that she saw the wounds on Maria’s body herself.
This heated debate ends up going in June’s favor. She is permitted to interview Clive after all, on one circumstance — she is not allowed to mention Adelaide’s murder. June breaks this rule anyway, questioning Clive with this sole intention. Gearing terminates the interview before June can ask any further questions.
How does Criminal Record Season 1 Episode 2 end?
Adding insult to injury, it is then revealed that Daniel had run a complete forensic analysis of the two calls. They are, in fact, two different people who made the calls. The case is therefore closed. Roy is disappointed in June’s obsessive behavior and pressures her to get back to Professional Standards about their concerns immediately.
June’s life seems to be falling apart. She screams in the toilets. Next, her co-worker Chloe passes her some important information. There are rumors that Daniel had fast-tracked the forensic report. He knew the results all along. He had played June to undermine her and she fell right into his trap.
She is now more determined than ever to solve the case. June plays Sonya the audio of the two calls. Sonya realizes that the first caller is still out there. June promises to find her since she needs protection at all costs.
