Summary

“Kid in the Park” is a much slower-paced installment. The storyline starts to get a little repetitive as the case is very gradually progressed. This can be frustrating at times, but the show remains professionally made and captivating enough to keep viewers coming back for more each subsequent week.

Another crime in the Hackney Downs area reconnects rival detectives Daniel Hegarty and June Lenker once again after the antics in Episode 2. In Episode 3 of Criminal Record Season 1, titled “Kid in the Park,” June continues her covert investigation into the murder of Adelaide Burrowes, whilst Daniel tries to silence June by whatever means necessary. The plot continues to develop in Apple TV+’s new crime drama, once again concluding with a cliffhanger ending.

“Kid in the Park” opens with this central crime. A 9-year-old boy is seen eating an ice cream in Rowntree Park. He is then suddenly shot in the head, out of nowhere. The potential killers flee on a moped. Daniel is handed this new case and soon arrives at the crime scene of this gang-related attack.

At work, June prints off posters, looking for the Hayes Lane anonymous caller. She then logs the required details for Professional Standards concerning the search violations. June overhears her boss Roy asking for volunteers for the Rowntree Park shooting. Hoping for a chance to get closer to Daniel, June volunteers herself.

Daniel updates Kim about the case. The boy is still alive in the hospital, but the surgeons are refusing to remove the bullet, which is still lodged in his brain. Daniel then welcomes June to the case. He asks her about her investigation into the anonymous caller. Daniel doesn’t want June to keep up the search, but he wants to know just how close she is to cracking the case.

Who is the “Kid in the Park?”

At home later that day, June notices her son Jacob hanging around with some new, possibly suspicious, friends. On the news, it is confirmed that the schoolboy shot at Rowntree Park is Isaac Whitlow. Jacob’s father Zac seems to know Isaac’s family and has contacted him, wanting to know if Isaac is alright.

Sonya and June discuss this case further that night. June wants to keep a close eye on Daniel. Sonya tells June that she has volunteers handing out June’s posters around the capital. She then passes June the box containing all the evidence and paperwork from Errol’s case. June is apprehensive to take it but eventually complies.

Daniel contacts his mystery sources looking for a tip-off to the Rowntree murderer. He then meets with Tony. His ex-colleague has found June’s posters and is concerned. They agree that June isn’t going to give up without a fight. Tony warns Daniel to watch out for this determined detective, she might just be their undoing.

June looks through Errol’s files. It doesn’t look promising. Errol had been involved in many crimes and arrested multiple times before the killing. Sonya suggests that June meet up with Errol at the prison to get a better understanding of the man. She promises to keep this meeting off the books. Daniel then calls June; Isaac’s mother has requested to speak with her.

Why does Isaac’s mum want to see June?

At the hospital, June meets Isaac’s mum Jenny for the first time. They only know each other through Zac. Jenny wants the bullet removed, but the doctors say it is far too risky an operation. June comforts Jenny, who then breaks down. Daniel is intrigued to hear why June was summoned. June explains that they only know each other from a friend of a friend. Jenny needed a friend, someone to talk to. Whilst chatting in Daniel’s car, June finds Daniel’s chauffeuring business card. She swipes it without him knowing.

Later, June visits Errol in prison. In the waiting room, Sonya and June swap visitors to keep things off the books. June asks Errol about his alibi and his surprise confession. Errol doesn’t seem to be that interested in defending himself though, he appears to have given in and lost all hope of being released.

Afterward, Sonya admits that Errol has been on hunger strikes and has overdosed many times in prison. Errol has well and truly lost all his fight. June shows Sonya the business card she stole from Daniel’s car. June is then updated on the Isaac case; they have found a possible suspect.

Who is Jason Reeve?

June is driven to the location of the arrest. Daniel received a tip-off; they think the shooter is a man called Jason Reeve. The police raid his home, but he isn’t found inside. Daniel watches the raid from a safe distance on many computer screens, but they have technical difficulties. Then Tony phones, telling Daniel about June’s visit to Whitecross.

The cameras spring back to life. Daniel sees Jason heading towards June with his weapon. He chooses not to warn her, hoping that Jason will kill her and save him the trouble. Technician Jed steps in just as Daniel is watching this all play out. This forces Daniel into warning June at the last second. Jason shoots at June only moments later.

How does Criminal Record Season 1 Episode 3 end?

It’s revealed that June is safe and was not shot. Jason has been arrested and later his discarded gun is found. Daniel asks June where she was during the day. June lies about her prison interview. Daniel then threatens Jed into staying silent about what he saw.

The episode ends with Daniel preparing for the press conference about the arrest of Jason Reeve. They are worried that the arrest could look racially charged, so they ask June to help out with appearances. June then receives a phone call from an officer involved in Patrick’s arrest. He reveals that Daniel had told them to let Patrick go. The plot thickens. Why is Daniel protecting Patrick?
