Summary
My Demon wastes half an episode on sappy rom-com stuff, but the back half delivers some big reveals.
I’ll be the first to admit that the first half of My Demon Episode 13 is a little tedious. It’s undeniable that throughout Season 1 people have really bought into the relationship between Gu-won and Do-hee, and since the first half of this outing embraces that pairing with a light rom-com vibe, it’ll probably be enjoyed by most. However, I’m personally of the opinion that this show works best when it’s fusing genres and elements, and it isn’t until the back half of the episode, which provides some serious revelations, that it feels at its best.
The central romance hasn’t necessarily been great for Gu-won, either, since there’s still that whole spontaneous combustion thing to worry about. However, his pool of potential clients has become considerably smaller since falling in love, as now he’s too soft to make deals with anyone other than the deserving.
It’s rare I’m in alignment with God, but she thinks too much happiness is a little toxic, and I’m inclined to agree. All Gu-won really cares about is preserving his happiness with Do-hee and building towards their idyllic future, which is nice and all, but it doesn’t necessarily make for engaging drama.
Do-hee does cut a sympathetic figure. As Seok-hoon explains to Gu-won, she has always blamed herself for the deaths of her parents, and even now she’s inclined to disappear within herself whenever she sees a reminder of the accident that killed them. She was exploited at her most vulnerable by the people who were supposed to be close to her, and it was only when she felt cared for and protected by Madam Ju that she began to move past the ordeal – though she clearly hasn’t forgotten about it.
All of this is purposeful storytelling to make the ending sting more. We’ll get there in a minute.
Suk-min is the worst
Elsewhere, Suk-min continues to be the absolute worst. Business-wise, he’s trying to get the family to all vote in favor of him dismantling Madam Ju’s philanthropic endeavors, which is hilariously overt villain behavior. Privately he’s trying to convince people that Se-ra has gone mad since he suspects her of having figured him out – which she has.
Suk-min is trying to control the entire company. He wants everyone’s shares, fires Seok-hoon, and is generally consolidating all the power and influence he can to demolish the version of the company that exists in the image of his mother. When Do-hee confronts him she realizes that he is Abraxas.
How does My Demon Season 1 Episode 13 end?
Episode 13 of My Demon ends with a bit of a curveball. With Suk-min taking up all of the villainous real estate, there’s scarcely room for another potential bad guy. However, he reveals to Do-hee that it was really Madam Ju who killed her parents, and he can seemingly prove it.
Suk-min plays an audio recording of Madam Ju being threatened by Do-hee’s parents with exposing her misdeeds. This led directly to the accident that killed them. But can Madam Ju really be responsible, or is this Suk-min taking any opportunity to cover up his own crimes by putting attention on someone else? I’m guessing the latter, but we’ll have to wait and see.
