American Nightmare covers the case of Denise Huskins and Aaron Quinn. After Matthew Muller broke into their home, Aaron was sedated and tied up while Denise was kidnapped and assaulted. The story was doubted by the police and media who felt it was too unbelievable to be true, claiming the situation was reminiscent of the film Gone Girl until Muller emerged as a legitimate suspect. The so-called “Gone Girl Kidnapper” remains in prison for the crime.

Where is Matthew Muller now?

Muller is currently in prison where he is serving a sentence for the kidnapping and assault of Denise.

Matthew is currently serving his sentences at FCI Tucson in Tucson, Arizona, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

What did Matthew Muller do?

Prosecutors say Muller broke into the couple’s Vallejo home while they were asleep. It was claimed that Muller tied them up, drugged them, then kidnapped and raped Huskins.

Although the story was doubted by police and the media, Muller would eventually be implicated in the crimes and would plead guilty in federal court to the charges of kidnapping. An article from 2018 on NBC Bay Area would include an interview with Muller, who was a former Marine and Harvard-educated lawyer, and report that Muller claims he was innocent of the charges.

What is Matthew Muller’s prison sentence?

Matthew Muller pleaded no contest to two counts of forcible rape, and guilty to robbery of an inhabited dwelling, residential burglary, and false imprisonment. He would receive an initial sentence of forty years for the crimes, and then a further thirty-one-year sentence on top of that.

Why was the abduction of Denise Huskins’ dubbed the ‘Gone Girl Kidnapping’?

Due to the authorities and media not believing the story, the case was dubbed the Gone Girl kidnapping. This refers to a book and film about a woman who is kidnapped, but it turns out that she staged the crime herself, among many other things, to frame her husband. The film stars Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike as the couple at the center of the story, and the book was written by Gillian Flynn.

Unlike Gone Girl, though, Denise Huskins was not guilty of her own kidnapping, and Matthew Muller was charged and imprisoned for the crime.

How was Matthew Muller caught?

Matthew would only be caught after he was investigated after another similar crime happened. He broke into another house in California in an attempt to assault someone else, but he was interrupted by the owner of the home and they got into a fight.

Matthew left his phone at the scene of that crime, and it was tracked by the police who discovered the phone was registered to Matthew’s mother. She would reveal that her son was staying at a cabin she owned in Lake Tahoe. He would be arrested there, and a search would uncover further evidence, including a strand of hair that belonged to Denise, that would implicate him in the kidnapping and rape.
