Summary
A fun episode that builds upon the series’ lore while introducing more interesting plot elements as well.
On their way down to the third floor, Laios’ party encountered multiple traps, but thankfully, their resident expert, Chilchuck, was more than capable of getting them through the first part safely. Now, in Episode 3 of Netflix’s Delicious in Dungeon Season 1, the party must continue their descent if they have any hope of saving Falin before a dragon digests her. While her fate is unsure, viewers can expect that Senshi will know the most delectable recipes for whatever monsters they encounter along the way.
The episode opens with Chilchuck continuing to lead the party to the third floor. After using Laios’ sword to unlock a secret passage, Laios notices one of the decorations has fallen off.
Laios tells the story of how he acquired the decoration after defeating Living Armor monsters with his sister during their earlier days of adventuring. Although he died for the first time retrieving the sword and is quite proud of it, he’s now more concerned with what Living Armor might taste like.
In the dungeon, the party encounters Living Armor and decides to just run past it. However, one of the suits comes alive and attacks them, triggering other suits to do so as well. When too many begin to attack, the party decides to flee until they figure out who or what controls them.
With a new plan to distract the armor, Laios’s party rushes back in, with Laios taking the opportunity to sneak on ahead. In the next room, he discovers another suit of Living Armor with the face of a tiger. Seeing no mages around, Laios attempts to fight the armor, assuming it is protecting something.
What is inside the Living Armor?
While battling the Living Armor, Laios notices the monster is closely guarding its shield. Upon further inspection, he realizes the Living Armor is protecting its egg case attached to the back of the shield.
Before this moment, Living Armor wasn’t thought to be alive. After realizing they have eggs and other functions, Laios concludes they are, in fact, living creatures inside suits of armor and, therefore, can be eaten.
After taking the helmet from the Living Armor, Laios inspects it and discovers a colony of Mollusks living inside each suit. The Mollusks seem to live between the plates in the armor and act as mussels, controlling the suit’s movement.
How does Delicious in Dungeon Season 1 Episode 3 end?
Senshi offers to try cooking the Mollusks even though he’s never done it before. They are unsure what to do but attempt to treat the creature like shellfish as they try to prepare it. He manages to make several dishes, including soup and stir fry.
Laios taste tests the Mollusk first, but after declaring it delicious, the others also try it.
Before they leave, Laios attempts to grab a new sword, only to find a Mollusk living in it. He keeps it anyway.
While this series has been a lot of fun so far, Episode 3 of Delicious in Dungeon felt like it had more depth to it. Cooking was still a major focus, but exploring the origins of monsters and even the detective work Laios did helped elevate the episode and round it out.
It’s nice to see there is more to the anime than just discovering new recipes each week. Being involved in creating these recipes adds to the viewer’s experience amusingly, while the series as a whole still incorporates the tropes that make the fantasy genre so entertaining.
Thus far, the series has mostly carried a fun, light-hearted feel. However, as it slowly introduces more lore and backstories, it’s becoming clear there is a lot more to this anime than what’s on the surface, and I’m curious to see where it goes as viewers get more comfortable.
