This is a testament to the filmmakers’ handiwork as Griselda is crafted into a complex yet captivating character.
The Netflix crime series about the notorious cocaine trafficker Griselda Blanco concludes Season 1 with Episode 6, “Adios, Miami.” The ending of Griselda explores the events which lead up to the drug lord’s arrest, whilst focusing on the heartbreaking conclusion to her life story. It’s an emotional finale as Griselda’s past crimes come back to haunt her in a heart-wrenching fashion.
The finale opens with Griselda and Marta Ochoa getting high together. Griselda admits that she has messed up after the party from hell. She asks Marta to put in a good word for her with Fabio, to apologize on her behalf. Marta thinks it’s futile, but changes her mind when Griselda offers to make her a partner in her business in exchange.
The two celebrate, but Marta suddenly overdoses, collapsing and then choking to death in her mansion. Griselda panics and calls Rivi over. He understands that it was an accident, but is certain that Fabio and Rafa won’t see it that way. They plan to dump the body and flee.
Whilst cleaning up her latest mess, Griselda finds a large stash of coke in Marta’s home. They plan to run away with the goods, but make it look like it was Marta betraying her boyfriend instead. Their plans are interrupted though as Rafa returns home early. Griselda and Rivi chuck the corpse in the hot tub and flee with all of Rafa’s drugs.
What happens to Dario after the party?
Griselda frantically packs, ordering her sons to do the same. Then Dario calls from the airport. He has decided to leave America, taking Michael with him. Griselda is mortified that her son has been taken from her. Dario thinks he is saving Michael from a life of crime though.
Meanwhile, June interviews Carmen, desperate for information that will link Griselda to all these murders. Carmen is willing to cooperate but promises that she doesn’t know anything about the killings. Elsewhere, Rafa wants revenge for Marta’s death.
Griselda, her sons, and Rivi escape to California. They hide out in a motel, while Rivi sells the stolen drugs for money. They plan to leave America once they have sold all of the drugs and saved up enough cash. These late-night deals soon get back to Rafa though, who heads to Los Angeles right away.
How is Griselda arrested?
Rivi is tipped off about Rafa’s plans. He warns Griselda immediately. Griselda lies to her sons and gets them away from the motel. She stays behind though. The audience may expect to see a showdown between Griselda and Rafa, but the Godmother phones the police instead. Griselda is arrested before Rafa can assassinate her.
Without anything to link Griselda to the murders, she is looking at 5 years in prison on drug charges alone. She pleads guilty but asks for protection in jail as the cartel wants her dead. While the police mull over Griselda’s offer, June makes plans of her own.
The police target Rivi next. They fake a kidnapping and post it on the news, with Rivi being announced as the lead suspect. CCTV footage then helps with the capture of Rivi after a rather silly bank robbery. The police offer Rivi his very own deal. They ask him to tell them everything that he has on Griselda or he is to face the death penalty. Rivi instantly betrays Griselda.
Thanks to Rivi’s new deal, Griselda’s old one is thrown out and she is sent back to Miami’s prison system. June chaperones her on the ride back to Florida. As Griselda vomits, June almost pities her rival. Both Griselda and Rivi are subsequently thrown in prison.
How does Rivi sabotage the police’s case?
Rivi has one final plan up his sleeve though. He flirts with the DA’s assistant and is embroiled in a phone sex scandal which is soon leaked to the press. Rivi purposely sabotages their case to help Griselda in the long term. Griselda is only charged with a mere 7-year sentence in the end. This storyline concludes with Dario being killed and his son Michael returning to America. All four of Griselda’s sons then pay their mother a visit in prison.
How does Griselda Season 1 end?
We then fast-forward 7 years to the end of Griselda’s sentence. June visits her enemy in prison to deliver some horrifying news. Griselda’s 3 eldest sons (Uber, Dixon, and Ozzy) have all been killed in gang-related shootings. The Ochoas finally got their revenge, waiting until the very end of Griselda’s sentence to wreak havoc. Michael is still safe back in Colombia thankfully.
After receiving this heartbreaking news, Griselda returns to her cell. She reminisces over the good times she spent with her children, specifically a day at the beach, playing it over and over in her mind. Then the screen is filled with information on the rest of Griselda’s life. She returned to Medellin after her release and was shot dead in 2012 by an unknown assassin at the age of 69.
