Summary
The penultimate episode brings us closer than ever to solving the overarching mystery, but fans will have to wait an extra week to find out who the real killer is.
In a somewhat ironic twist of fate, after weeks of slow-paced build-up, Episode 11, the penultimate installment of Like Flowers in Sand Season 1, finally inches to within touching distance of a conclusion to both the criminal plot and the underlying love story – but the finale is delayed until next week. Classic!
After Episode 10, all hands are on deck to figure out who killed Chil-seong, with Du-sik happily blurting out details of the investigation to whoever will listen to crowdsource evidence and theories for how they might be able to crack the case. Seok-hui thinks that Snowball is integral to the matter.
The justification for Snowball being essentially a witness is that whenever she’s released she heads straight to the reservoir – Seok-hui even released her himself one time to understand why it happened so often. Whoever is usually letting her out is trying to find Chil-seong’s phone.
Is Pil-du the killer?
Park Pil-du begins to emerge as a real suspect. Baek-du spots him outside Snowball’s house late at night. Jin-su – who Du-sik also filled in on matters – overhears that Pil-du was the last person to see Cheol-yong alive. He doesn’t have an alibi for the night of the murder, claiming to have been asleep with nobody to verify this, and Snowball’s owner confirms that a man with a medium build – matching Pil-du’s description – tried to untie Snowball during the night.
Baek-du overhears Pil-du talking to Tae-baek, claiming he had just been walking around aimlessly. His being near Snowball’s house was a coincidence – he was just ambling in the guilt of what happened to Du-sik’s father and Cheol-yong. During the initial investigation, Pil-du’s testimony had implicated Jun, Du-sik’s father, even though Pil-du never seriously suspected him. The police had made up their minds and used his testimony to validate their suspicions, for which Pil-du blames himself.
Mi-ran becomes bait
To draw the killer out, Mi-ran reveals who she is to the townsfolk, who are confused and a little annoyed that she had been living among them without revealing she was Cheol-yong’s daughter. The timing seems random to them, but of course, we know that the killer wasn’t aware of who Mi-ran was and will be inclined to reveal themselves.
How does Like Flowers in Sand Season 1 Episode 11 end?
The penultimate episode ends with Pil-du being exonerated thanks to Baek-du, but also with the plan to use Mi-ran as bait working. At the end of the episode, the real culprit confronts Mi-ran in the café, asking her what evidence she has. We don’t see his face, but the implication is pretty clear. However, fans will have to wait a whole week to get their answers, as well as find out whether or not Baek-du and Du-sik end up together.
