Summary

Criminal Record intensifies somewhat in Episode 5 with the two main characters’ children entering the fray. The subplot involving Jacob’s arrest especially hits home, bringing up powerful debates surrounding race, police corruption, and underage crime in the UK. It’s a gripping subplot that will frustrate and compel viewers.

As we enter Season 1’s second half, Criminal Record regains some focus with Episode 5, “Possession with Intent.” In this gripping installment, the drama intensifies further with more harsh developments in June’s personal life. The Sixty-Twos target her son next in another harrowing display of police corruption and systematic racism that can still be found within the force.

“Possession with Intent” opens with June and Leo discussing the Errol Mathis case once again, this time with the additional input of a work colleague. She suggests that memories can be manipulated and that false ones can even be planted into a person’s mind to coerce certain responses. This could explain Errol’s initial confession.

Who from the Sixty-Twos is a member of Combat League?

June continues to investigate the case, researching potential officers that could be linked to the far-right group known as Combat League. She believes that Daniel and his cronies (The Sixty-Twos) could be a part of this controversial group. June interviews Clive, showing him photos of The Sixty-Twos gang. Clive notices Tony Gilfoyle, confirming him to be a member of Combat League.

After this shocking confirmation, June visits Tony, confronting him outside his home. Tony denies any affiliation to the political organization, calling June a bully in return. Tony is rattled though, having a panic attack once she’s left. He phones Kim to tell him the bad news — June is on to them.

June’s team have further successes that day. A photographer shows June and Sonya images of Daniel coming in and out of a well-known drug den. He explains that the business is run by Miras Mansur, a criminal dealing in heroin. It looks like Daniel is a regular there. What is his relationship with this drug dealer?

Why is Jacob arrested?

As the investigation starts to progress, June is shaken by another major setback. Her son Jacob is frisked and then arrested by officers whilst walking down a street with his new friends. The officers plant drugs on his person and take him down to the local police station. Jacob is arrested for possession of methamphetamine.

As the tension gears up, poor Jacob receives one phone call. He tries June, but his mother doesn’t answer her phone. Next, Jacob calls his grandmother Maureen. She panics and races out of the house to save him. Maureen appears to be suffering from the early stages of dementia though. She gets lost and can be seen utterly bewildered on the city streets. She ends up in A&E herself.

Eventually, June and her ex-husband Zac arrive at the police station to pick up their son Jacob. The boy is reunited with his family but looks completely shaken and traumatized by the events. He apologizes profusely. June is livid, asking for the names of the arresting officers. She investigates these names further, discovering they have ties to Kim Cardwell.

Why does June arrest Miras Mansur?

June is certain that Daniel and The Sixty-Twos are behind this horrifying incident. Leo isn’t as easily swayed though. He doesn’t believe her. The couple argue over this disagreement with racial issues quickly entering the fray. Angered by the injustice of it all, June decides to go and arrest the drug dealer Miras Mansur, to regain some control over the situation.

Miras contacts Daniel Hegarty whilst being driven to the station by June. The two rivals agree to meet by the docks. Daniel orders June to free Miras, stating that he is a trusted asset. June brings up Jacob’s arrest instead though, blaming Daniel for this injustice. This is the main reason behind the arrest. However, the DCI denies any involvement in Jacob’s arrest. He genuinely had nothing to do with it.

It would appear that Kim Cardwell planted meth on Jacob without Daniels’ prior knowledge, acting alone. June mentions Tony’s involvement with Combat League as well. Daniel explains that Tony was working undercover for all those years. He promises June that he can get Jacob off the system if she lets Miras go. June eventually complies, putting her family before the law for a change.

How does Criminal Record Season 1 Episode 5 end?

After this unfortunate incident, Daniel pays Kim a visit. He is furious with his colleague, explaining how they had June in the palm of their hand. June could’ve been arrested for harassing Tony, but Kim squandered their advantage and ruined that prime opportunity. As payback, Daniel purposely damages Kim’s brand-new car.

Following on from these events, Daniel secures a new flat for Patrick, paying the deposit in full on his behalf. Patrick hands Lisa (Daniel’s daughter and Patrick’s secret girlfriend) a spare key to the flat. It is later revealed that Daniel is buying drugs from Miras to feed Lisa’s drug addiction. The episode ends with him handing her a new supply of drugs. She is clearly in the throes of addiction and Daniel doesn’t know what to do.
