Summary

Criminal Record cannot help but fall into melodramatic cliches from time to time, but even when the series dips in quality it still makes for a fascinating watch. The unraveling mysteries continue to deliver the goods as viewers are left with another cliffhanger ending.

Apple TV+’s intense crime drama series Criminal Record marches towards its Season 1 finale and the unraveling of its many addictive mysteries with Episode 6, “Beehive.” In the latest installment, Detective Sergeant June Lenker hones in on racist ex-cop Tony Gilfoyle, whilst DCI Daniel Hegarty searches for his missing daughter Lisa after a rather nasty argument. The show continues to walk a fine line between melodrama and gripping crime thriller, with a final third that will have viewers desperate for more.

Episode 6 starts with June being handed more of Errol Mathis’ files on the murder case. She finds Daniel’s old logbook and analyses the data with Sonya. It would appear that Errol changed his mind and confessed to the murder after revisiting the crime scene. June and Sonya believe that Errol was manipulated into this confession. June promises to get to the bottom of the case once and for all.

She interviews Errol’s old lawyer Ross Cardona next. June believes that Ross was working with Daniel to force Errol into confessing. Ross refuses to answer any of June’s questions, but he is visibly rattled by the interrogation. Ross leaves Daniel a message that night, concerned about the questioning.

Elsewhere, Doris tries to motivate her son Errol with a surprise prison visit. She updates him on the new developments in the case, mainly focusing on the anonymous caller and her fresh information on the real killer. Errol isn’t interested in Doris’ good news though. He just wants to be left alone. Errol storms off after arguing with his mother. Suspiciously, he doesn’t seem to be interested in getting out of prison.

Doris is then confronted by her old friend Latisha, who was spying on her for Tony. Latisha ended this secret operation on June’s instruction and is now homeless because of her actions. Doris decides to confront Tony about his horrid operation and the way he has treated her friend.

And in the other subplot, DCI Daniel Hegarty pays Patrick a visit. Unfortunately, Daniel’s daughter Lisa answers the door. Daniel was unaware of Lisa and Patrick’s secret relationship. This revelation of course ends in an argument between the father and daughter. Lisa says some rather harsh things about her dad, accusing him of feeding her drug habit.

What does Lisa steal from Daniel?

Daniel tries to make amends, but Lisa disappears before he can apologize. The DCI speaks with Patrick about the argument, asking him to look out for Lisa. Daniel then heads to his home, where he finds his drug stash has been raided. Lisa took the heroin and ran.

Whilst frantically searching the city streets for his daughter, Daniel misses an important meeting with Assistant Chief Constable Claudia Mayhew. Daniel looks for Lisa at all her usual haunts, but he’s unable to find his daughter. She later turns up back at Daniel’s home, safe and sound.

At the same time, June researches Claudia Mayhew’s initiatives online. She sees the hateful comments below the news articles. Claudia is even receiving death threats for her plans to reform the Metropolitan Police Service. June continues to look through the comments sections, discovering a telltale clue to one of the trolls’ identities.

Who has been sending death threats to Claudia Mayhew?

June is certain that Tony is one of the main trolls attacking Claudia. She confronts him at his home. June asks Tony about Errol’s confession, desperate for information on how or why Daniel coerced him. Tony refuses to help her, calling June a “token copper”. June mentions the online trolling, which Tony also denies, but it is evident that he is the one sending the death threats.

As soon as June has left, Tony begins to destroy his computers, attempting to remove the evidence of his online crimes. Just as he is about to dispose of this evidence, Tony is accosted by Doris on his drive. Doris demands an apology for Tony’s actions. Tony ignores Doris and attempts to leave, but he ends up hitting Doris with his car instead.

Tony is spotted by many eyewitnesses committing this crime and is then later arrested for this collision. Daniel meets with him down at the station. Tony admits to his online trolling and he then informs Daniel of the location of some sensitive material that he has hidden at his home.

June takes her findings to Claudia Mayhew and they search Tony’s home after the incident with Doris. As June arrives on the scene, Doris is declared dead. Errol is told about his mother’s death. The police then search Tony’s home, taking all the evidence they can carry.

Daniel soon arrives to take Tony’s incriminating evidence before June can find it. Daniel demands to be given all of the evidence immediately, but June informs him that she is in charge of the case. Daniel cannot be involved as he has a conflict of interest. June suspects that Daniel is after something though. She reads him like a book and eventually finds the hidden evidence.

What is Tony hiding in his beehive?

The police search Tony’s beehive in his back garden and find a secret disc hidden inside it. June plays the disc, which is footage of Errol’s confession. This footage was supposed to have been damaged or lost, but June is able to watch the footage in full. It reveals that Daniel coerced Errol into confessing and signaled to him exactly what to say.

The episode ends with June confronting Daniel about the footage. Surprisingly, Daniel doesn’t deny any of June’s accusations. June asks for the whole truth about the case and Daniel agrees to his own confession. June has finally gathered enough evidence and worn Daniel down to the point where he is now ready to give her all the necessary details.
