Summary
Another consistently entertaining episode that helps flesh out this series’s world and characters.
As Netflix’s newest anime, Delicious in Dungeon, gears up for Episode 6 of Season 1, Laios and his party find themselves closer to locating his sister and the infamous Red Dragon who consumed her. The reality of how dangerous this mission is set in when the party stumbled upon a group of deceased adventurers lying in the halls attracting ghosts. While it took everything they had to exorcise the ghosts, it wasn’t a complete loss as they acquired a new recipe for Holy Water sorbet.
The episode opens with Laios’ party, deciding where to stop to set up camp. Although Laios wants to relax where they are, Senshi thinks they should wait until they’re on the Dungeon’s fourth floor instead, where they may have a better chance of catching food.
Chilchuck manages to unlock the door to a dining hall, where the group stumbles upon a Living Painting, a type of Dungeon monster that depicts a scene adventurers can enter. Although what appears in the painting is tangible to those who enter it, the contents of the painting cannot be transferred between worlds.
Laios enters the Living Painting with a rope tied around his waist and is immediately immersed in the scene of a King naming his newborn baby Delgal. Although he does find food, the vibe of the people in the painting makes him uncomfortable, and he soon asks his friends to pull him out.
Liaos enters a new painting, only to find the scene of Delgal’s wedding feast in this one. Just as he is about to sample the food, the King is poisoned, causing panic. Through the commotion, Laios notices a familiar-looking elf run past but doesn’t think much of them. Instead, he attempts to leave the painting with food for his party, only for it to disappear on arrival.
This time, Laios vows to taste the food in his next painting, which turns out to be Delgal’s corrination. After eating his fill, he attempts to leave, only to be confronted by the elf he saw earlier. They accuse him of being an outsider, saying they remember Laios from all of Delgal’s major life events before attempting to attack him. Although his party manages to pull him out in time, none of the food Laios consumed remains in his stomach when he leaves.
As they find a place to set up camp, Chilchuck notices a Mimic in the hall but ignores it. Later that night, he is forced to confront it after stumbling into a trap while gathering water. He tries to figure out an escape, only to be attacked by the Mimic hiding inside a chest. He manages to escape when the Mimic is killed by setting off a trap that crushes it under prison bars.
When he doesn’t return, Laios’ party goes searching for Chilchuck. Senshi and Laios are intrigued by the idea of trying to cook up the Mimic he’s killed and begin prepping it for consumption.
As they eat, Marcille pesters Chilchuck into revealing his age, as they assume he is a child because of his size. Chilchuck reveals he is 28 years old and soon turning 29.
Although the format of each new Delicious in Dungeon episode has been relatively similar, I have yet to find myself bored or to find the series to be too predictable. If anything, each week’s new adventure is full of surprises and antics I did not see coming.
One thing this series is handling particularly well is the story’s pacing. Regardless of the very “monster of the week” format, the storytelling still manages to balance that while progressing the main plot and introducing us to new character traits. Yet, the episodes never feel jumbled or like they’re skipping over vital information. It’s been one of the easiest fantasy worlds to grasp the basics of, which is nice as sometimes understanding new worlds can be overwhelming to viers if they’re too complicated.
