Netflix’s limited series One Day shares a title and source material with a 2011 romantic drama starring Anne Hathaway. However, it wouldn’t be accurate to say that the 14-episode series is a strict remake, but instead a different, deeper interpretation, one blessedly free from some of the issues that held the film back.

Is One Day on Netflix a remake of the 2011 movie?

It is probably safer to say that the series is more of a re-imagining of the 2011 film, and both features were adapted from the hugely successful novel of the same name by David Nicholls.

One Day, both the series and the 2011 film, are adapted from the book by David Nicholls, but the series has been blessed with fourteen episodes that allow the script to fully flesh out and build the world that lead characters Dexter and Emma live in. The runtime of the movie was a comfortable hour and forty-seven minutes, and although the premise of the book was as developed as it could be in film form, the TV series can further explore and expand on the characters and their lives over the twenty-year timeline.

The film follows the lives of two young college students who spend a day and a night together in Edinburgh, Scotland. The couple has great chemistry, but they fail to commit to each other at the time. After their encounter, we get to catch up with them on the same day next year, and our snapshot of their lives continues over the next two decades. Each chapter in the book is another year passing by, and the film stays as close to this premise as possible, as does the Netflix series. However, with the extra time involved in the series, we will get a much more fulfilling exploration of the concept.

If you were a fan of the book, you must check out the movie and the series and see how things line up.

The series was a co-production with Drama Republic, Universal International Studios, and Focus Features, and the named executive producers are Nicole Taylor, Jude Liknaitzky, Roanna Benn, and interestingly David Nicholls, the author of the original book.

For our money, it is always a good sign when the writer of the source material is on board with an adaptation. Nicole Taylor is also heavily involved with the show, named as a producer and a writer.

Who plays Dexter and Emma in the series?

Leo Woodall plays the part of Dexter Mayhew and Emma Morley is played by Ambika Mod.

London-born Woodall may be familiar from his role in the second season of the HBO series The White Lotus, and Ambika will be recognized from her role in the BBC medical comedy-drama This Is Going To Hurt.
