The chilling and haunting Netflix drama Bhakshak is inspired by the harrowing real-life events that occurred at the Muzaffarpur Shelter Home in Bihar. A social audit in the Bihar area revealed a horrific catalog of abuse at Muzaffarpur and other facilities, leading to the conviction of Brajesh Thakur, as well as eleven others. Thakur was the prime suspect in the Muzaffarpur shelter home case where 34 girls, aged between 7 and 17, were abused.
Where is Brajesh Thakur now?
Brajesh Thakur is in prison for his crimes and remains in the Tihar Central Jail.
The Wikipedia article on the subject provides a detailed breakdown of the case. It states:
“Thakur was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for offenses under “Indian Penal Code sections 120-B (criminal conspiracy), 324 (causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and those relating to abetment, Section 21 (failure to report commission of an offence) of the POCSO Act and Section 75 (cruelty to child) of the Juvenile Justice Act.”
An article in The Hindustan Times would clarify:
“Brajesh Thakur, the politically connected owner of a shelter home in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur where several girls were raped for years, will be in prison “till his last breath”, a special court in Delhi ordered on Tuesday while handing down life terms to 12 people over a case that triggered national outrage in 2018.”
What did he do?
Thakur was instrumental in a meticulous system of abuse and cover-ups at the shelter. The article in The Hindustan Times would go on to report details from news agency PTI.
“It is writ large that this is not a case of a single solitary incident of rape, but a meticulously planned and ingeniously executed conspiracy wherein the caregivers, the supervisors, and the administrators in a state-sponsored children’s home themselves turned into predators, perpetrators of crime and abettors and repeatedly subjected numerous minor girls to atrocious acts of rape and aggravated penetrative sexual assault over an extremely long period of time spanning about four years.”
The wife of the deranged offender is Kumari Asha. Kumari was a teacher at R S College, Muzaffarpur.
Is Bhakshak on Netflix based on the Muzaffarpur Shelter case?
The film is inspired by the real-life events that happened at the Muzaffarpur Shelter but it changes names and places, and is not a recreation of the real events as they happened, but focuses more on the investigation of a journalist who is doggedly trying to uncover the truth behind a shelter for young girls.
Brajesh is not named in the film but there is a character called Bansi Sahu who runs the shelter, and this character, played by Aditya Srivastava, may represent the real-life Thakur.
