Bhakshak is inspired by real events, detailing the investigation of a girl’s shelter through the eyes of an investigative reporter and her cameraman as they try to bring the truth out into the open. With the film gaining a lot of attention, we’ve rounded up a few recommendations of movies like Bhakshak that also feature investigative journalism in plots often inspired by horrific true stories.

No One Killed Jessica (2011)

Here is another case like Bhakshak is inspired by true events, this time the murder of Jessica Lal, a model who was shot dead in Delhi while attending a party. The film also features a relentless quest for the truth as Jessica’s sister, Sabrina Lal, and Meera Gaity, a journalist, do whatever they can to bring the killer to trial, but the accused is a powerful and influential man who looks set to escape justice.

Spotlight (2015)

This shocking expose follows The Boston Globe’s incredible work investigating the cover-up surrounding sexual abuse within the Catholic Church. Editor Walter Robinson is played by Michael Keaton, spearheading his team diving into the nightmare, under the direction of Tom McCarthy.

All The Presidents Men (1974)

When it comes to films that involve true stories about journalistic determination, there is one that set the benchmark way back in the 70s. Starring Hollywood royalty Dustin Hoffman and Robert Redford as The Washington Post’s Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, we see them uncover the details of the Watergate scandal that led to President Richard Nixon’s resignation.

Sirf Ek Bandaa Kaafi Hai (2023)

This is another case of a powerful man involved in sexual abuse and the efforts of an advocate trying to prosecute him. Directed by Apoorv Singh Karki, we follow Advocate Solanki facing all kinds of danger in his pursuit of truth and justice. The film has many plot points similar to our featured movie, so if you enjoyed it, you should also check this one out.

Love Sonia (2018)

Love Sonia is from director Tabrez Noorani and just like Bhakshak follows a terrible narrative as we find Sonia, a young girl from India, who is sold by her father and finds herself in a nightmarish world of sex trafficking. Sonia is determined to find her similarly sold sister and must make her way through a terrifying underworld to save herself and her sibling.

Honorable Mention: Nightcrawler (2014)

Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Louis Bloom in Dan Gilroy’s Nightcrawlerin a film that explores what can happen when the news is made rather than reported. Bloom realizes that he can sell his photographs to news outlets and gets the goods by listening to a scanner and getting to the action before the emergency services can. However, Bloom’s desire for better material leads him to manipulate some scenes into more sellable content, and a spiral begins, showing that sometimes what we see presented as news may not necessarily be the absolute truth.
