Netflix crime drama Berlin will return for Season 2, the streamer has confirmed, teasing the return of the Money Heist prequel with a short video promo, a new cast photo, and assurances that the gang will all be returning for the latest outing — though, disappointingly, that production won’t start until 2025.

Berlin Season 2 Confirmed

Netflix officially confirmed the renewal of Berlin on Monday, February 19, 2024. What’s On Netflix reported on the news and shared the official teaser for Season 2, which depicts Pedro Alonso’s titular character entering an elevator overlaid with the number 2:

Is Berlin a prequel or a sequel to Money Heist?

Berlin is a prequel to Money Heist, with the events occurring before the story in seasons one and two of the parent show. The show can also be considered a spin-off to Money Heist.

It was always ascertained that Berlin has had a colorful past, so there are plenty of stories that can be mined from that past, and that is where Berlin fits in. The popularity of the character and the opportunity to flesh out the world of Money Heist made this an obvious choice for the production team to focus on, and with the character’s arc coming to a very definite end in Money Heist, this is the perfect way to bring viewers more content with the fan-favorite.

What was the response to Season 1?

IMDb rates the show at an impressive 7.5/10 but some very negative user reviews dub the series as dull and mediocre. Collider is also scathing in their review of the show, saying “Berlin’s plot is illogical and relies on coincidences”.

However, Decider urges you to stream the show, even though they say it doesn’t “bring anything new” to the genre. Zoom gives the show a three-star rating out of five, and says it “undeniably succeeds in providing an entertaining crime drama.”

At the time of writing Berlin has been a major hit for the platform:

“During its premiere week, Berlin was the most-watched series globally and reached the top 10 in 91 countries. Since then, it has remained in the top 10 for seven consecutive weeks in non-English TV, amassing 348 million hours viewed and 53 million total views. The series is now ranked at number 9 among the most-watched non-English language series in the history of Netflix.”

Cast

Netflix also announced that most of the cast are already signed on for the second season. They include Michelle Jenner as Keila; Tristán Ulloa as Damián; Begoña Vargas as Cameron; Julio Peña Fernández as Roi; and Joel Sánchez as Bruce.

Of course, Pedro Alonso will also return. The announcement came with a new photo of the cast below:
