Me Hereafter has an episode dedicated to Kira Steger, who failed to turn up for work during a historic blizzard and was later found dead in the Mississippi River, having been murdered by her husband, Jeffery Trevino. The Hulu true crime series asks the somewhat controversial question of what if the victims of murder had a voice beyond the grave? In Episode 3, a voiceover from the POV of Kira explains the events as they unfold, making this a very unusual approach.

What happened to Kira Steger?

In February 2013, Kira was on a date with her husband Jeffery Trevino, but the next day she would fail to arrive for work, which was out of character for her. When colleagues reached out to find her, they could not get in touch and eventually called the police. Tragically, a few months after her disappearance, Kira’s body would be found.

Kira was found battered, with a head wound, a broken finger, bruising to the lip, and a laceration to the liver. It would subsequently emerge that she has died of blunt force trauma at the hands of her husband, and was dumped in the polluted Mississippi River. Trevino was already on trial for her murder by the time the body was found.

Kira’s body would be found floating in the Mississippi River by a barge in downtown St. Paul. Due to the length of time it took to find her, her body could only be identified using dental records.

Kira Steger disappearance and murder timeline

  • The last sighting of Kira was when she was on a date with her husband on February 21st, 2013.
  • When she did not arrive for work on the 22nd of that month, colleagues informed law enforcement.
  • On February 25th, police found Kira’s car,  abandoned in a parking ramp at the Mall of America, where she was co-manager of a clothing store. Bloodstains were found in the trunk, and a search of the couple’s rental home uncovered blood evidence, leading to Trevino’s arrest.
  • Kira’s body was found in the river in May of 2013.
  • Her murderer would be tried and sentenced in October of 2013.

Kira’s husband Jeffery Trevino was convicted of second-degree unintentional murder for Kira’s death. He was acquitted of intentional murder.

Kira was having an affair with another man, and Trevino became aware of the situation. It was reported that the marriage was in trouble, and Kira had been involved with someone else. An article in the Twin Cities Pioneer Press would report on the case. They would say that the jurors’ main problem was whether or not the murder was intentional. “Did he intend to do it, or was it an accident?” said juror Brandon Wilson of St. Paul. “I just feel like the state didn’t show enough evidence that he did.”

What was Jeffery Trevino’s sentence?

Trevino was sentenced to twenty-seven and a half years for the murder of Kira.

From the same article above:

“We will never have our daughter back, but at least justice has been done,” Jay Steger, the victim’s father, said outside the Ramsey County Courthouse in downtown St. Paul.

Her mother, Marcie Steger, said that her daughter would be happy to know Trevino was going to prison.

Jay would also express disappointment with the length of the sentence, claiming no length of time would ever be enough to punish Trevino for what he had done.
