Me Hereafter covers four terrible true crime stories, presented with a new twist. One of the cases featured in the series is of the dreadful killing of Monique Baugh. The controversial Hulu series gives Monique a voice in her own murder, a gimmick which has already angered some reviewers who claim it is in bad taste.

What happened to Monique Baugh?

On December 31st, 2019, Monique Baugh was found shot to death in an alley in Minneapolis. Three fatal gunshots led to her death. However, there was more to the story and another attack that pointed to a pre-meditated series of events that even today have never fully become clear.

Monique’s kidnapping and murder may have had something to do with her boyfriend, a rapper known as Momoh, who was also attacked the same as Monique. The trial revealed that Momoh had been attacked about an hour before Monique was shot. Two gunmen would enter the home of Momoh, who was with his two young children at the time, and would shoot him several times before retreating. Momoh called the police, who would find him and his children in the home after the attack.

Previously though, Monique, a successful realtor, had received a phone call about a job that she took on. However, this was a ruse to get her to a location where she was kidnapped, and an hour after the attack on Momoh, she would be murdered. The attacks seemed to be revenge against Monique’s boyfriend, but the exact details are not clear.

What happened to the perpetrators?

Two men were eventually apprehended for the crimes: Berry Alexander Davis and Cedric Lamont Berry of Minneapolis. They were convicted of first-degree murder in the death of Monique Baugh. The two men will begin their life sentences without parole only after serving concurrent sentences of 13 and 20 years for kidnapping and attempted murder, respectively.

Were other people involved in the crimes?

As the investigation into the terrible events continued, it was established that two other people were also charged with first-degree murder and kidnapping including Lyndon Wiggins, 36, who prosecutors say had a falling out with Monique’s boyfriend Momoh; Elsa Segura, 29, a former Hennepin County probation officer, accused of using a burner phone to set up the fake home-showing that resulted in Monique’s kidnapping and murder; and a fifth person, Shante Cheriece Davis, charged with being an accomplice after the fact.

Why was Elsa Segura’s conviction overturned?

A jury in 2021 convicted Segura of premeditated first-degree murder, attempted premeditated first-degree murder, kidnapping, and first-degree felony murder while committing kidnapping. However, Justice Gordon Moore would put forward a case that there was insufficient evidence to convict her of aiding and abetting first-degree premeditated murder, or premeditated attempted murder. With this in mind a new trial was arranged, and at the time of writing, there are no updates on the situation.

An article in the Star Tribune states:

In her appeal, Segura argued that the state failed to prove that she knew of the kidnapping-murder plot or that she intended to aid those crimes. “The central issue is what Segura knew when she scheduled the house showing with Baugh,” Moore wrote.
