Summary
The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin pilot is wild, crazy, and over-the-top and I couldn’t have loved it any more. This series is ridiculous in all the good ways.
Episode 1 of The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin highlights the rise of Dick Turpin. Through his own stories, we discover how Turpin went from being a butcher to running a gang to being about to be hung for his crimes. With his back against the wall, Turpin must rely on his new team to save him from death. It’s a ridiculous but brilliant start to Season 1.
Why is Dick Turpin about to be hung?
Dick Turpin is on his way to be hung for his crimes. On the way, the group of men have stopped for a final drink before they are killed. At the bar, a writer named Eliza Bean approaches Turpin to say that people would love to hear his story. We find out that Turpin was arrested for shooting Tom King’s face right off.
Her desire to tell his story excites Turpin, who begins to unpack his childhood. His father was a butcher, but Turpin realized that the life of a butcher wasn’t for him. Turpin’s dad grew frustrated because instead of killing the animals, Turpin would draw, come up with different ideas, and dress up in lavish outfits.
Because of his love of animals, Turpin refused to be a butcher, so his father hired Benny to do the job instead, but in return, Turpin would have to move out and go on his way. So Turpin packed up his sewing kit and went about his business.
What job does Tom King send Dick Turpin on?
At a bar where Turpin is having a drink, Tom King and his crew arrive. However, the young waitress denies them drinks because she doesn’t know who they are. After interrupting him when Barker orders, King tells Turpin he will travel with Lord Rookwood and stop his coach, directing him to Rowney Woods, where Tom and his crew will be watching.
Lord Rookwood realizes that Dick Turpin is working with Tom King and yells for his coachman not to stop. King is already a step ahead and shoots the coachman, and the carriage flips over. After the crash landing, Lord Rookwood takes off running from the scene.
How did Tom King die?
Tom King arrives at the carriage looking for Rookwood, but he isn’t there. Turpin’s failure to do the job leads King to point the gun at him, telling him he will kill him. As he is about to pull the trigger, Turpin’s bag falls from the tree and hits and kills King.
King’s henchmen approach, asking if Turpin killed Tom, and he stutters, but they are excited because Tom is rude, and they don’t like how he orders them around. Although he is about to go on his way, the team asks Turpin to stay and run the gang, and he does.
Jonathan Wilde arrives to inform Turpin that he had a deal with Tom King, and since he killed him, he is to honor that deal. Turpin and his team would continue to steal, and Wilde would sort through it and take what he wanted from the job. Turpin fights back at Wilde’s demands, but he threatens to have them arrested for the murder of Tom King.
Storytime is over, and the coachman has announced that it is time for them to get back on the carriage. It’s Dick Turpin’s turn to be hung, and he gives one last speech where he says his team is about to rescue him. Instead, Turpin makes a fool of himself, and they drop the rope. As he is choking to death, Nell, Honesty, and Moose come to the rescue, chopping the rope and escaping with Dick.
