Blood & Water has managed to endure for four seasons so far, and while Season 5 hasn’t been confirmed yet, it’s quite likely. The South African Netflix series has remained popular despite mixed reviews and having reached several natural stopping points, and the streaming platform has been known to extend shows in marketable genres much longer than it needs to, as we’ve seen with something like Elite.

Has Netflix renewed Blood & Water for Season 5?

At the time of writing, there has been no official confirmation of Blood & Water Season 5. Given that Season 4 has only recently debuted, this is not surprising news and shouldn’t be taken as indicative of anything. Netflix will, as ever, monitor the success of the show in the next few weeks and use the numbers to determine whether or not to greenlight a continuation.

In our Season 4 ending explained article, we did highlight that many of the characters have reached what seems to be an end to their personal arcs and there isn’t much steam left in the premise. Of course, artistic credibility is the least of Netflix’s concerns when it comes to renewing or canceling its shows, but we would say that the latest season of Blood & Water does seem like a reasonable end point, and we’re probably not the only ones.

How have critics and audiences reacted to Water Season 4?

There have been some mixed reviews for Blood & Water throughout its run, and Season 4 is no different. In our review we said the latest season didn’t hit the mark, and gave it overall a disappointing two stars out of five, saying:

I’m disappointed in Blood & Water Season 4. Is a spin-off fair? Sure. However, any extension to this primary story would be truly a cash grab rather than an act of a sane mind.

The sentiment has been echoed on social media, with people taking to X to comment about the show. Some were disillusioned with the series, @southernsiren__ would say: “Blood & Water is filled with so much and I’m losing the plot.”

@Nolwazii_K added: “Need this to be the last season of Blood & Water.”

Blood & Water was popular when it debuted, with the first season having earned a very respectable 80% on Rotten Tomatoes, but it has taken a downturn since. The overall 6.7/10 rating on IMDb for the whole series reflects more mixed opinions as things have progressed.

Blood & Water Timeline of Releases

Here’s a quick timeline of the seasons so far.

  • Blood & Water Season 1 dropped on May 20th, 2020.
  • Season 2 arrived on September 21st, 2021,
  • Season 3 debuted on November 25th, 2022.
  • The fourth season was released after an uncharacteristic two-year gap on March 1st, 2024.

Generally, each season of Blood & Water has six episodes. This has been true of Season 1, Season 3, and Season 4. The only outlier is Season 2, which oddly had seven episodes.

Blood & Water is produced by Ngoasheng, Daryne Joshua, Travis Taute, Simon Beesley, Benjamin Overmeyer, and Bradley Joshua under Gambit Films. Cinematography has been done by Zenn Van Zyl.
