Netflix are yet to renew their French action series Furies for Season 2, but the John Wick-inspired first season seems right for a continuation after a cliffhanger ending. Set in an eccentric Parisian underworld full of colorful crime bosses, the eight-part show mixes action with complicated family drama and teases a world much larger than what is seen in the first run of episodes.

Season 2 Renewal Chances

At the time of writing, Furies has not been renewed for Season 2. However, it is still early days for this show, and Netflix will be taking some time to see how the series performs on the platform before green-lighting another set of episodes.

The showrunners are hoping that there will be another run, as the first season ends on a cliffhanger, which usually indicates that the team has further ideas for more stories in this world. International shows in very popular genres tend to be reliable targets for renewal on streaming platforms. A mixed critical reception will likely have no bearing on the viewership figures. In the non-English TV charts on Netflix’s Top 10Furies is second overall in its first week of release with 16,200,000 watch-hours. These are very impressive numbers, and on this basis, it’s very likely that Furies will be renewed sooner rather than later.

What could Season 2 be about? Theories Explained

At the end of Furies Season 1, Lyna and Selma were ambushed by agents of Damocles, an independent mercenary organization, who had taken over the Parian underworld — known as “The Olympus” — and were now in charge of the Furies, the matrilineal peacekeeping family that keeps the other Godfathers in check.

Season 2 would doubtlessly explore this new dynamic, with Selma and Lyna being forced to work for Damocles and perhaps working to take them down — or take them over — from the inside. Damocles were introduced late in Season 1, so this would be a good opportunity to explore how they operate and what their leadership structure is like.

Secondarily, Selma and Lyna were on their way to find Lyna’s mother, who had been in hiding for years after double-crossing her husband Driss, Selma’s brother. Selma had executed her sister-in-law’s family to cover up her failures in allowing an undercover cop to get so close to the Olympus, but Lyna doesn’t know this. This plot would test the dynamic of the two leading ladies even further, especially now that Lyna has begun to see Selma as a surrogate mother figure.

Critical Response to Season 1

While it is doubtful that critical reception would influence Netflix’s decision to renew or cancel a show, it can affect word of mouth, which in turn can hamper a show’s popularity upside. This would make the mixed critical reception of Furies an important factor in its renewal chances.

In our review, we gave Furies a middling 2.5/5, saying:

Action fans should probably keep an eye out either way since there’s a satisfyingly kinetic core to Furies, and the cliffhanger ending – yes, of course, there’s one of those – suggests a future to the story that might be a little more interesting with all of the scene-setting out of the way. As things stand, Season 1 is a decent but trying first effort with a reach that slightly exceeds its grasp.

Decider were a bit more on board for the series, urging you to stream it and saying, Furies isn’t exactly deep, but it’s full of action and has a plot that’s not exactly hard to follow.”

Currently, the show has a rating of 6.1/10 on IMDb, but that could change as more reviews roll in.

The first season of Furies has eight episodes, and they all run around the forty-five-minute mark. This makes for quite an easy binge-watch, and the pacing supports this too.

It’s likely that a second season would replicate this number of episodes and utilize similar pacing and the same kind of balance between action and drama, since these things quite quickly become central to a show’s identity.
