Based on the 2018 book Chasing Hillary by New York Times journalist and co-creator Amy Chozick, The Girls on the Bus debuted on Max with two episodes that introduced us to the characters at the heart of this political comedy-drama. Episode 3 will debut on March 21, and pick up from the pretty big cliffhanger at the end of Episode 2.

Felicity Walker Is The Villain, Right?

It seems fairly obvious thus far that Felicity Walker is quietly villainous, and that this is integral to Sadie’s arc. We already know how Sadie embarrassed herself by becoming too emotionally invested in Walker’s campaign, but it wasn’t until the second episode that we realized Walker is kind of awful, blaming Sadie for losing the last race.

With Walker attaching herself to Bennett right before she was suddenly mired in scandal, one has to assume that Walker was somehow involved in the exposure of that scandal. Swiping up Loafers as her employee suggests this as well. I reckon Episode 3 will show how calculated she has been to get herself into this position.

And this matters to Sadie because it’s through this that she’ll learn how cutthroat politics is, and have to decide if her idealized worldview has any place in it. We’ve already seen her using more underhanded tactics to get an in with Walker, and I suspect that’ll continue. Speaking of which…

Who sent Sadie the burner phone?

Was it Walker who sent Sadie the burner? If so, why? I expect this is the beginning of a more conspiratorial thriller plot, and I also suspect it’s the beginning of a long line of bad decisions that Sadie will make to ultimately get her in position as a fugitive from the FBI, which we know happens since the series opened with it.

My early working theory is that, whoever sent Sadie the burner, it’ll be used to give her tips and insider information that she has to decide whether or not to report on. It makes sense that it’d be one of the other candidates who do this to potentially have her ruin their rivals, but what would her motivation be? I don’t think there’s anything to blackmail her with right now, and she hasn’t come across as so careerist thus far that she’d go out of her way to do this. So, lots more still to unpack here.

Who directed The Girls on the Bus Episode 3?

The third episode is directed by Marcos Siega, which doesn’t seem worth noting until you take a peek at his credits since he’s a little bit of a deviation from the first two directors — Jesse Peretz (Girls and Glow) directed Episode 1; Marta Cunningham (Dear White PeopleGrace & Frankie) directed Episode 2 — that might indicate a slight change in tone for the show.

Siega is known for stuff like YouDexter: New Blood, and The Flight Attendant, among others. These are more obviously thriller-type shows less in-keeping with the thus far quite light and satirical tone of The Girls on the Bus. Will that burner phone herald a change in tone?
