Summary
The penultimate episode is full of humour and builds to a momentous moment between the leads. We’re heading for that happy ending.
Doctor Slump is almost at an end, and after Episode 15, Ha-neul and Jeong-woo are getting married. Probably, anyway. The proposal is a bit ludicrous, but that’s to be expected at this point in Season 1, which is building towards an unashamedly happy conclusion. We’re all here for it.
One Ring to Rule Them All… Plus Some Other Trinkets Just In Case
I’m telling you, if Jeong-woo lived in Middle Earth, the place would be ruined. He can’t look after a ring to save his life. He can’t decide whether to buy one or not. He drops them under the sofa. He second-guesses himself and buys up half a jewelry store to supplement the ring with necklaces, bracelets, and earrings. On the one hand, Ha-neul is a lucky girl. On the other, she only has so many body parts to adorn with all this bling.
Jeong-woo just wants to buy Ha-neul a present; if she agrees to marry him that’s a bonus. It’s a testament to the quality of the characterization throughout this series that we know he means this. His eagerness to please – and inability to keep anything from Ha-neul – is charming.
So Close Yet So Far With Dae-young and Hong-ran
Speaking of charming, Dae-young and Hong-ran get closer than ever to some kind of romantic entanglement and then… don’t quite make it. Yet.
Hong-ran’s still a bit put out after seeing the nurse accidentally kiss Dae-yeong on the cheek. Her feelings about relationships are pretty complicated, best summarized by a comparison to drinking that she makes later – fun in the moment, but painful the next day. We’re getting there, but we’re not quite there yet.
Luckily, things take a positive turn later, when Dae-yeong tries to confess his feelings for Hong-ran through text and accidentally sends the message to his daughter. Doh! Luckily, this yields some meaningful advice, so Dae-yeong asks Hong-ran to meet and tells her how he feels. And they kiss!
Getting Over The Slump
Doctor Slump is so-called because it’s about two people reaching their lowest ebbs. It stands to reason, then, that as we close in on the finale, we’d find our leads finally coming out of that slump and realizing they’re living their best lives – together. And thus, here we are.
After the surgery on the little girl Jeong-woo’s helping, both he and Ha-neul have this realization. They made their mistakes in the past, with each other and individually. But they’re together now, openly and officially, and Jeong-woo is excited about having a girlfriend worth gloating over.
The penultimate episode ends with the proposal. Hilariously, Ha-neul gets there first, asking Jeong-woo if he’d like to be in her family, and in a mishap he cuts his finger. One thing leads to another and Ha-neul discovers all the gifts in the drawer.
Jeong-woo explains that he bought so many just in case she didn’t like one or the other, but he was too scared to present them to her. He does, though, getting her to wear all the jewelry – told you this was a bit silly – before finally slipping the ring onto her finger and popping the question.
