Summary
Some major twists and turns really liven up Queen of Tears.
Now seems as good a time as any to mention that every episode of Queen of Tears is feature-length, which is quite clearly ludicrous. But Episode 6 makes the most of the time. There’s plenty of insight into Hyun-woo and Hae-in’s marriage, as expected, but also some surprising twists and turns.
After the reconciliation at the end of Episode 5, things are more complicated for Hyun-woo and Hae-in than ever. Hyun-woo has finally gotten what he wanted in some respects. Hae-in wants to re-write her will – which she was forced to write before she married him – so that Hyun-woo gets some of her inheritance. But now he doesn’t want her to die. He wants to sleep in the same bed, he seeks favors from God, and he threatens the doctors to go ahead with the treatment. He’s trying his best.
Is his best enough for an audience that was introduced to him as someone who kind of wanted his wife to die to spare himself the headaches? Another question, one supposes. But I went on about this in the previous recap, so let’s not repeat ourselves.
Eun-Seong Has Many Unexpected Allies
Eun-seong’s scheming seemingly extends much further than we realized. Early in the episode, he and Da-hye search Hyun-woo’s house and plant something there that is discovered later. Ha-hye’s marriage to Soo-cheol is inauthentic, just a part of the long game, and even Hyun-woo’s secretary seems to be in on it all.
After getting caught at the hunting club, Da-hye is in Grace’s bad books. The latter also thinks Da-hye is going soft on her husband, in a strange mirror of the central relationship. Speaking of Soo-cheol, he met Da-hye when they were in the same orphanage, and she proposed to him straight away. There’s also a chance that his son might not be biologically his.
Hyun-woo remains the preeminent target of the villains, so Grace manipulates Hae-in’s mother into thinking that Hyun-woo intentionally made things difficult for Soo-cheol. Hyun-woo is also set up as the whistleblower who exposed the chairman’s bookkeeper’s embezzlement when a wiretapping signal leads back to his room. There, his safe is forced open, revealing divorce papers (which had been discovered earlier by Grace).
Hae-in and Hyun-woo Reflect
While all this is going on, Hyun-woo and Hae-in remain in Germany, reminiscing over their first loves, trying to find the love lock they put on a bridge, visiting different places for food, and buying little gifts. In a reflective mood after another hallucination, Hae-in talks about her dead brother, who died in a mysterious accident at sea after saving her life. This is the genesis of her mother’s resentment towards her – she blames Hae-in for the death of her son.
Given these circumstances, Hae-in doesn’t want to hear it when her mother calls about Hyun-woo being the whistleblower.
Seul-hee Is A Fraud
Elsewhere, Beom-ja discovers that Seul-hee is really Oh Sun-yeong, and had been impersonating a dead person for three decades. She had been in prison for adultery and delivered a child while there – a child that may very well be Eun-seong.
Queen of Tears Episode 6 Ends With Hae-in Finding Out About the Divorce
Despite the lovely time they’re having in Germany, the episode does not end well for Hyun-woo and Hae-in. Just as it seems like things are better than ever, Hae-in’s mother sends her a picture of the divorce papers. She’s instantly crushed, and Hyun-woo can’t deny the truth when he’s confronted.
The epilogue returns to the scene of Hyun-woo giving Hae-in the umbrella. She follows him in her car while he takes public transportation, running with his bag over his head to shield himself from the rain.
