Summary
A powerful and riveting episode of We Were the Lucky Ones closes out an incredible three-episode start for the series.
Genec and Herta are imprisoned in Siberia, struggling to stay afloat in Episode 3 of We Were the Lucky Ones. On board the ship to Brazil, Addy finds himself smitten with a girl named Elizabeth. However, he realizes the boat isn’t going to Brazil as expected, causing much concern for him and everyone on board.
Halina is able to steal some supplies from her new boss, but it frustrates Adam and his colleague because she could’ve been in danger. Adam is unhappy with how irresponsible Halina has been acting lately, using fake IDs to visit the prisons. Halina explains she knows the stakes but is trying to find her brother Genec.
Genec and Gerta Are Taken to Siberia
After Genec is arrested, his wife Herta steps outside and says, “If he is an enemy, I am an enemy.” This leads to them arresting her as well. We see Genec and Herta on board a train, at which point we fast forward three weeks later, and everyone on board struggles from the lack of resources.
Genec, Herta, and the rest of the arrested people arrive at their new destination, where they will work in the fields in exchange for a place to live and three meals. The leader announces that if they work, they eat; if not, they won’t. He also announces that this is their new home and cautions they should not try to run away.
Addy Meets Elizabeth
Addy arrives at the port to board the ship heading to Brazil. He becomes quite an entertainer on the ship, mixing and mingling with everyone until he stumbles across Elizabeth Lowbeer. They become smitten with one another. The following morning, the duo are awakened by noise from the ship, and they see they are close to land. Both know they can’t be close to Brazil and notice they may be going the wrong way.
The ship stops in several different places, delaying their arrival in Brazil. Addy’s frustration with the matter builds up, leading to his confrontation with the captain. The captain reveals they will be heading in that direction but doing it at their own pace. Elizabeth notices Addy is upset and visits him in his room, and the two end up sleeping together.
We Were the Lucky Ones Episode 3 ends with Herta giving birth
Genec requests to meet with the Commandant and is taken to him. He attempts to get some rest for his wife, but the Commandant denies the request. Even pleading with them to let him see the doctor was still a no. At the same time, Herta is beginning to have the baby.
Genec returns to work, where he is told he is late and must report to headquarters to deal with his punishment. The Commandant tells him he will have his food withheld for a week. Genec snaps at him, stating how unfair this is for everyone there. They beat him down and send him back to his quarters. He arrives and is introduced to his new baby. He holds her and comforts his wife.
The episode ends with soldiers escorting Halina out of her new job.
