Many biopics have focused on the lives of famous rock legends, including Rocketman and Bohemian Rhapsody, and Netflix is continuing the trend with the release of Beautiful Rebel. The upcoming film is set to bring fans of Gianna Nannini the inside story of her journey, and will no doubt introduce a new audience to her talent too.
What is Beautiful Rebel about?
Beautiful Rebel tells the story of Gianna Nannini and chronicles her life from childhood, including her inspirations and influences and the events that would shape her and make her an icon for many people through to the present day. Gianna would face obstacles from her own family, and even her record company, and the film explains how the icon overcame those events.
The official IMDb synopsis reads;
A fragment of the life of one of the most incisive and renowned voices of our music, a thirty years old story starting from childhood and the roots of her life and career, up to her consecration, passing through a turning point that cuts Gianna’s life into two parts, so much so that it is considered her true birth: the year 1983.
Who is Gianna Nannini?
Gianna Nannini is a talented songwriter and poet born in Sienna in 1954. Gianna would study music, particularly piano, in Milan in the 70s, and would work towards gaining her degree in philosophy in 1994 while also writing her own material, which became hugely popular throughout Europe.
In August of 2010, fifty-six-year-old Gianna surprised the world, announcing her pregnancy on the cover of Vanity Fair. The picture on the cover of the magazine saw her wearing a t-shirt that read “God is a Woman”.

In November of the same year, Gianna would give birth to her daughter Penelope Jane Charlotte in Milan. The father of the child has never been revealed.
By 2017, Gianna had decided to move to London, and her autobiography explained how the decision was made and her civil partnership with her partner Carla. It should be noted that the film is based on her autobiography, Cazzi miei, which was published in 2016. This would be her second published work, after collaborating with an artist and another author for her book Stati D’Anima in 2009.
Her first album was self-titled and released in 1976, and this was followed up with a series of further recordings right through the seventies, eighties, and nineties through to the present day. As recently as March 26th, 2024, Gianna would be a guest on The Flight on RTL. She would chat with hosts Zac and Matteo about her upcoming projects and, of course, the Netflix biopic.

Who is cast in Beautiful Rebel?
Gianna is played by Letizia Toni, who first appeared in a 2015 horror movie entitled Infernet. After her debut in that project, she would go on to appear in a documentary with a musical theme called Zoroaster, Io Casanova. She also appeared in Season 3 of the Rai series L’Allieva.
