The anticipated anime movie My Oni Girl will debut on Netflix in May following a theatrical run in Japan. Coming courtesy of the highly respected Studio Colorido, there is much excitement building for the fantasy adventure, so here’s everything you need to know about it ahead of its streaming debut.

What is the plot of My Oni Girl?

My Oni Girl revolves around a boy and his demon girlfriend. High school pupil Hiiragi just wants to be accepted and tries to find friendship by never saying no to requests that people make of him. One Summer, he meets a girl named Tsumugi, who happens to be a demon that has arrived in the world of humans to search for her mother. Unlike Hiragi, Tsumugi does whatever she likes, making her the exact opposite of her new friend, and the fantasy adventure story begins as the two characters find that by being together, they can help each other on their respective journeys.

The official Netflix synopsis reads:

My Oni Girl tells the story of Hiiragi Yatsuse, a first-year high school student who struggles to make friends despite his efforts to please others. His life takes an unexpected turn when one summer day, he meets Tsumugi, an oni (demon) girl on a quest to find her mother in the human world.

My Oni Girl will drop on May 24th, 2024. The film will also have a theatrical release in cinemas in Japan, with many hoping it might also make it to selected theatres in the UK and the US around the same time. The film is part of a deal that the studio clinched with Netflix.

Who is in the voice cast?

The film will feature the vocal talents of Kensho Ono, who plays the part of Yatsuse Hiiragi, and Miyu Tomita, who takes on the role of Tsumugi.

Tomotaka Shibayama, a former employee of Studio Ghibli, directs.

Other Animations by Studio Colorido

Studio Colorido was founded in Japan in 2011, and My Oni Girl is the fourth film from the studio. In 2018, they released Penguin Highway, which was based on a science fiction novel of the same name, and was adapted into a manga before becoming the first theatrically released film from Studio Colorido.

They’d follow up with A Whisker Away in 2020, a fantasy romance that premiered on Netflix and Japanese cinemas simultaneously. In 2022, Netflix would strike a three-film deal with the studio, and Drifting Home would be the first film from the partnership. The film is a comedy-drama, that would also receive a theatrical release in Japan at the same time as it dropped on the streaming platform.

My Oni Girl is the second film in the Netflix deal.

As well as the films, the studio is also behind some well-loved anime series such as Fastening Days, Burn the Witch, Poketoon, and Star Wars Visions. The studio would also produce some short films, and if you are a fan of their work you will no doubt have seen Shashinkan, Sonny Boy and Dewdrop Girl, Wonder Garden, Paulette’s Chair, Typhoon Naruda, and Bubu and Bubulina.

For those of you that are wondering. the “Colorido” in the studio’s name translates to “rich in color” or “colorful” in Portuguese and Spanish.
