Summary
“Into the Breach” is the last important stop before the Bad Batch find Mount Tantiss and rescue Omega. Clone Force 99 work on getting there, while Omega and the other children in the Vault work on getting out.
“Into the Breach” provides one more obstacle in the way of Clone Force 99 finally getting to Mount Tantiss. That has been their objective throughout Season 3 of Star Wars: The Bad Batch, so it’s good that by Episode 13, we’re finally almost there.
Luckily, Omega is one step ahead and is using her incarceration to plan a breakout for her and the other children. These two plot threads will invariably converge in the next episode after the important setup done here.
There’s a two-pronged approach in “Into the Breach”. One half of the episode is devoted to Clone Force 99 and a comically reluctant Vice-Admiral Rampart linking up with Echo to acquire exact coordinates for Tantiss, while Omega meets the children in the Vault and immediately starts plotting their escape.
Imperial Station 003
Let’s start with the Clone Force 99. Rampart explains to them that any ship headed for Tantiss has to first dock at Imperial Station 003, which orbits Coruscant, to receive the exact coordinates. Naturally, then, the plan is to head there, but it’s easier said than done.
Getting into the station requires Imperial clearance codes and Rampart to play-act an officer to get the rest of the team past security. Since nobody trusts Rampart as far as they can throw him, most of the episode’s essential tension comes from not knowing whether or not he’ll betray everyone.
As Hunter reminds him, though, the Empire betrayed him too.
A New Plan
To be fair, Rampart holds up his end of the bargain. He namedrops Governor Tarkin and spews a bunch of Imperial jargon to get the guards out of the way. But a new hiccup presents itself, requiring a new plan to circumvent it.
There is a science vessel heading to Tantiss. However, since the coordinates are only transmitted to a ship’s navicomputer after it has taken off, the only way to use it to get to Tantiss is to sneak aboard. Echo does so, using the droid port, and then deactivates the proximity sensors so that Hunter, Wrecker, and Crosshair can hitch a ride.
It’s touch and go for a while but this, too, is successful. The Bad Batch have finally found Mount Tantiss.
Omega Makes Friends
Speaking of which, Omega spends the episode with Eva, Jax, Sami, and baby Bayrn, the other children who’re imprisoned in Tantiss’s vault.
The kids don’t know what to make of Omega, who starts working on her Shawshank Redemption ideas immediately. The other children are mostly just scared and worn down by the punishments for disobedience and the endless experiments, so they assume, rightly, that Omega is going to get them into trouble.
But they also see that she means business. So, when she pumps them for information about their schedules and routines, they give her the goods.
By the end of Star Wars: The Bad Batch Season 3 Episode 13, Omega has pried open one of the panels in her cell using a medical tool stolen from Emerie. For once, the advantage seems to be shifting to the anti-Imperial side.
