Under Paris taps into a primal fear many of us have had since Jaws traumatized a generation in the 197os. This new approach to the well-known trope is directed and co-written by Xavier Gens and we have some production notes that might interest you ahead of the film’s release on Netflix in June 2024.

What is the premise of ‘Under Paris’

There’s a shark in the Seine just in time to coincide with the Paris triathlon. Can scientist Sophia stop a catastrophe?

The official synopsis from Netflix reads:

“Summer 2024. Paris is hosting the World Triathlon Championships on the Seine for the first time. Sophia, a brilliant scientist, learns from Mika, a young environmental activist, that a large shark is swimming deep in the river. To avoid a bloodbath at the heart of the city, they have no choice but to join forces with Adil, the Seine river police commander.”

This may be a basic premise but when you are making your killer shark movie, it can often be beneficial to keep things simple. Cleverly, Under Paris will be released ahead of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

If you are taking part or plan to be present at the games, I would probably avoid this movie. Just in case.

Release Date

Under Paris will drop on Netflix on June 5th, 2024.

Official Trailer

After reading the synopsis, I found that the trailer was everything that I thought it would be. There are plenty of shots of the shark, and there are the usual dramatic shots of struggling scientists staring at footage and exclaiming “Impossible!”

We also get footage of the participants in the event entering the water, even though we know there’s a shark in there. It’s nothing groundbreaking, but if you are a fan of shark attack adventures, this is probably just the trailer you want to see.

Cast and Crew

Bérénice Bejo plays the scientist Sophia and you may recognize the actress from playing Peppy Miller in the Academy Award-winning movie The Artist, Christiana in A Knight’s Tale, and Marie Brisson in The Past. This film marks the Netflix debut for Berenice.

Actor Iñaki Lartigue plays Juan, and you will know him from  A Chance to Win and the TV thriller Ammo. Other cast members include Nassim Lyes, Lea Leviant, and Jose Antonio Pedrosa Moreno.

Crew-wise, Under Paris was directed by Xavier Gens, who you will know from The Divide, Cell, and Hitman. The film was written by Sebastien Auscher, Yannick Dahan, and Xavier. Sebastien was also an executive producer and Let Me Be is the production company behind the feature.
