Gangs of Galicia tells the story of Ana, a lawyer new to the small town of Cambados, who manages to upset the status quo and earn the attention of a dangerous drug dealer’s son. Both Galicia and Cambados are real places, and the Netflix series was filmed on location, despite the area being more known for its seafood than its criminal underworld.

Is Netflix’s ‘Gangs of Galicia’ Really Filmed in Galicia?

Galicia is indeed a real place, and you can find it in Spain. It’s located in Atlantic Europe and has borders with Portugal, Castile and Leon, and the Cantabrian Sea.

With the show firmly planted in the region, it was imperative that the show would be filmed there, so the production crew made sure that those familiar with the location would recognize a lot of the location work used on the show.

As far as Cambados is concerned, it is also a real location, well known for its incredible white wine and seafood and known for some historical monuments that you can spot in the show. The opening scene highlights the marina of the area, with a lot of the action happening on the water.

As well as Galicia the end credits feature thanks given to various regions including Fuengirola, Torremolinos, Marbella, Portugal, Malpica, and Do Porto, suggesting that filming was also carried out in these areas.

Production Timeline

Here’s a brief timeline of how Gangs of Galicia made it to our screens:

  • Netflix announced in May of 2023 that filming had started on the show.
  • Filming continued over the next few months in various locations in Galicia.
  • A trailer dropped on YouTube on May 6th, 2024.
  • Gangs of Galicia dropped on Netflix on June 21st, 2024.

‘Gangs of Galicia’ Is Also Known As ‘Clanes’

It seems that the show is also known as Clanes, although it seems to depend on where you are watching it.

Interestingly, if you go to IMDb, the poster shows the title of Clanes, which translates into Clans in English, and I am not sure why the name of the series has been changed.

To be fair, Gangs of Galicia does tell you a little more about the show, and there is also a Flemish TV series called Clan that aired in many regions, so the name change may have had something to do with that.

Back in 2023, Netflix reported that the show was in production, and even then it was known as Clanes. If you watch the teaser trailer on Netflix, it also refers to itself as Clanes, so I can only assume that somewhere down the line the title was changed, probably to help differentiate it from the other show and to make it more appealing when you see it in your listings on the streaming platform.
