WARNING: THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS MAJOR SPOILERS

The ending of Sausage Party: Foodtopia seems to suggest a second season, which is more of a threat than anything else. But Episode 8 nonetheless presents the most genuinely compelling plot turn thus far, which means that if Prime Video were cruel enough to renew this nonsense, it would at least be starting on a stronger narrative footing.

Since I’ve got to earn a living somehow, I’ve broken down the events of the first season’s climax to explore some possibilities for a follow-up in more detail.

Brenda Really Is Dead

There was a part of me that expected Foodtopia to walk back the unexpected decision to kill Brenda in the penultimate episode. However, the finale confirms that she is indeed gone, with the earliest scenes being a bit of a memorial for her.

Most of Episode 8’s events stem from this development. Julius – once again anally piloted by the grain of rice, who I think is nameless? – has framed Frank for Brenda’s murder and plans to publicly execute him to prove a point about how food-on-food violence is unacceptable. To broadcast the message, he has supplanted Sammy with a donut named Duncan.

An Unlikely Partnership

Naturally, Barry and Sammy want to break Frank out, but he refuses to participate in the prison escape they propose. Luckily, Veiner has video evidence of the final confrontation between Julius and Brenda which proves that he’s piloted by a grain of rice and they were responsible for killing Brenda.

So, the plan shifts to proving Frank’s guilt. To this end, Barry and Sammy go to Jack for help. Jack is still going steadily mad in the woods, eating his former friend’s leg, but since he’s apparently in love with Frank, he agrees to help. It’s worth noting that Barry’s position on human beings hasn’t remotely changed, he’s just willing to work with Jack to save Frank.

The plan is for Jack to throw Barry, Sammy, and the phone containing the video through a vent in a frisbee. With a bit of a pep talk from Barry, he pulls it off, kick-starting the finale’s extended action sequence.

Frank Is Free

While Sammy works on broadcasting the video, Barry has to fight off Julius’s remaining henchmen. Eventually, the video proof is disseminated, Frank is freed, and Julius is exposed.

After the loss of Brenda and his near-death experience, Frank immediately promotes a message of peace and forgiveness. This is slightly undermined by the rice grain being eaten by a passing bird, but it’s the thought that counts.

However, it leaves the new issue of who should be in charge post-Julius, and the food immediately erupts into chaos trying to work that out. Frank quietly and forlornly slips away.

Does Frank Becoming A Dictator Mean Sausage Party: Foodtopia Season 2?

The ending of Sausage Party: Foodtopia finds Frank returning to conquer the food, using Jack as an enforcer. He’s taking over and not giving anyone any choice in the matter, ostensibly for their own benefit. But that’s always what dictators say, isn’t it?

This new status quo sets up a second season. With Frank now forcibly in charge and Brenda dead, one would expect him to continue a relationship with Jack while he becomes more and more isolated from the other food. It’s as solid a setup as a show like this really needs, but the question of whether a sophomore outing would be worth the effort – let alone the viewer’s time – is another question entirely.
