Summary

Episode 9 of Miss Night and Day makes some progress in the main case, but it does seem to amble around more than previous episodes have.

Thus far, Miss Night and Day has gotten by with a distinct rhythm. Each episode unveils just enough clues about the ongoing mysteries and just enough progress in the key relationships to feel like it’s moving forward, without having to overstuff every episode and mess the pacing up. Episode 9 is the first outing to feel, at least to me, like it was biding its time a bit – arguably too much.

Stuff happens, of course, and calling it “filler” wouldn’t be fair. But it’s a more relaxed-feeling installment than what we’re used to.

Connections

Episode 9 of Miss Night and Day begins by revealing that Ji-woong blocked the long-awaited first kiss between himself and Mi-jin with his hand. Oops! This creates a bit of frosty awkwardness between the two of them. Mi-jin retreats to Ga-yeong, avoiding Ji-woong when she bumps into him, while he doubles down on investigating the case.

Mi-jin is so annoyed that she forgets to calm down as Im Sun, causing Ji-woong and Byung-duk no end of confusion

Speaking of the case, it turns out there was fentanyl in Mr Baek’s wife’s blood. With fentanyl in the severed arm that turns up before the first victim was discovered and the severed foot that will seemingly precede the second, a clear link is established, though not every question is satisfactorily answered.

Ji-woong, theorizing that the Daeho reservoir has been unexamined, gets the police to reopen the case and search the area for the body that might have been dumped there. Ko Won also receives a letter intimating that one of the interns is lying about their identity, but it’s not clear who it pertains to.

Na-Eun’s Body Is Discovered

Ko Na-eun’s body is indeed discovered in the reservoir, which causes chaos in the prosecutor’s office since Ji-woong’s efforts in the discovery lead to the case being handed to him.

It’s clear, by the way, that Ji-woong is strongly relating this case to that of his mother, who it turns out has been missing all these years, but was never confirmed dead. Ji-woong is probably still clinging to the idea of her survival even now.

Mr Baek is the prime suspect, and the fact that the search warrant for the hospital is denied only makes him seem more suspicious. He clearly has contacts in the police and elsewhere, enough to call in favors to dig up forensic reports and presumably stymy legal proceedings.

Gathering Evidence

Taking down someone powerful means acquiring hard evidence, so the team plans to infiltrate the hospital and search for something that implicates Mr. Baek.

Under the ruse that Sun has a stomach ache, they get inside the hospital. She sneaks into his office, takes a razor for DNA purposes, and is just about to go through some papers when Baek returns.

Sun is able to hide, but Mr. Baek looks over her blood test results. Of course, there are two Im Suns, and two lots of blood results. However, they show different blood types (one of them being Mi-jin’s, obviously). Baek is confused about what this might mean, while we, the audience, are wondering what exactly he has been up to all these years.
