Like most of Tyler Perry’s movies, Divorce in the Black was filmed at his expansive studios in Atlanta. It’s also — like most of his movies — terrible, but that was a matter for our review.

Tyler Perry’s output and influence in the industry is an endlessly fascinating topic, since he has an extraordinary amount of power and resources and continues to churn out movies that are successful irrespective of their quality or the negative conversations that continually spring up around them.

Filming Locations

It was a foregone conclusion that Divorce in the Black would make use of Tyler Perry’s studio location in Atlanta, Georgia.

The studio can be found at 315 Deshler Street in Atlanta, and Perry uses the studio for many of his productions, which makes sense as it keeps the cost down and is readily available for use whenever required.

The studio is one of the biggest in the U.S. and consists of 330 acres of land outside of East Point, Georgia. The studio has twenty-one movie sets at its disposal and was once a U.S. Army barrack. Marvel’s Black Panther is said to be the first film made there.

With such a facility at his disposal, it comes as no surprise that Divorce in the Black, like other recent Perry movies like Mea Culpa, would also be filmed there. With the studio contributing to the overall economy of Atlanta and Georgia, eagle-eyed viewers local to the area will also be able to spot other locations, used for establishing shots and to help authenticate some scenes in the film.

Social media posts also reveal that some work was done in Savanah, Georgia, with actor Cory Hardrict, who plays Dallas in the production, posting about filming in this area on Instagram.

Tyler’s Perry’s Production Company and Other Movies

Tyler moved into the studio business back in 2006, and by 2019, he would announce the opening of the huge Atlanta-based studio, used for numerous productions, including this latest offering.

Perry has a slew of films behind him, starting with 2005’s Diary of a Mad Black Woman, and continuing with numerous other titles including Madea’s Family Reunion (2006), Daddy’s Little Girl (2007), Meet The Browns (2008), I Can Do Bad All By Myself (2009), Why Did I Get Married Too? (2010), Good Deeds (2012), The Single Moms Club (2014), Nobody’s Fool (2018), A Fall From Grace (2020), and Mea Culpa (2024).

This is just a sampling of the films from the studio — there are many others, and it does not look as if Tyler is showing any signs of slowing down, although looking at some of the reviews, it appears there are many who wish he would.

Tyler Perry’s Burgeoning Media Empire

When interviewed by Variety and asked about “pursuing ownership of his work” he would reply,

“What I learned was that the ownership is non-negotiable. It’s not at all. I have to have that particular part of it because that is where generational wealth is made. That’s where things are established for generations to come for my son and his kids. And if they are as smart about it as I have been, then everything will change. I think that’s how you change entire communities.”

Tyler has a huge portfolio of work behind him. As well as the films he has also worked on twenty stage plays, seventeen TV shows, and two best-selling books, but his childhood was not perhaps what you would expect, and he recalls being impacted by poverty and dysfunction.

However, he would hone a talent, writing letters to himself, fuelled by the difficulties he encountered, leading to him writing his first play. Despite initially failing to find an audience, it would eventually gain traction six years later and would help to springboard him into building his media empire.
