Kleo Season 2 has less of an ending than the first season did. That initial outing, despite leaving a few threads dangling, worked as a self-contained story. Episode 6 of this sophomore effort angles more blatantly for another season, introducing several big revelations at the last minute, including the existence of Kleo’s cosmonaut twin brother.
Whether we’ll see a third season is anyone’s guess and will depend largely on the success of these six episodes, but there’s plenty of meat on the bone, narratively speaking, if Netflix decides to greenlight another go-around.
Let’s unpack everything that went down in the Season 2 finale.
Kleo Goes To See Her Grandmother
Wearing the seahorse necklace, Kloe goes with Sven to visit her grandmother, Akulina. She vaguely remembers the place from her childhood, with her past continuing to peek through in brief, vague snippets, as it has all season.
Akulina’s efforts to try and get Kleo to abandon her revenge mission against Nikolai fall on deaf ears. There’s too much water under the bridge. No matter how much Kleo and Nikolai apparently have in common, despite Akulina pulling out old photo albums of the two of them together, Kleo is determined to stop Nikolai from establishing the Soviet Republic of Germany.
Grandmother and granddaughter part ways. Resolves are stiffened. Lone tears are shed. The battle lines are drawn.
Kleo Kills Uwe — Or Does She?
While Kleo and Sven go to see Kleo’s old friend, Natasha, Nikolai calls Kleo to try and talk her around, but his efforts prove fruitless. The next news is that Kleo is infiltrating the KGB building and snooping around Nikolai’s office.
Her sleuthing turns up documents and an old family photo. But while she’s distracted by these things, Romana sneaks up on her. Finding herself held captive, Romana reveals she admires Kleo for her willingness to disobey the party and its leaders. However, Uwe shows up and shoots Romana dead.
Following a chase, Kelo manages to corner Uwe and eventually kills him in return. Or so it seems!
Kleo Locates The Pact And Kills Her Father
Thanks to the family photo and some other clues – including a model on Nikolai’s desk and Kleo’s recurring dream of a cosmonaut – Kleo deduces that the pact is being held in the Monument to the Conquerors of Space.
Disguised as Soviet officers, Kleo and Sven break into the building, eventually finding the safe containing the pact. But they’re immediately confronted by Rose, who tries to tempt Kleo with a letter containing vital information about her past which she’s willing to exchange for the pact. Kleo, though, rejects the offer, just in time for Nikolai to arrive and shoot Rose.
Kleo sets the pact alight to prevent Nikolai from getting it. In the confusion his gun goes off, but Sven throws himself in front of the speeding bullet to save Kleo. Kleo shoots her father dead.
Kleo Season 2 Ends With Multiple Revelations
Sven survives being shot thanks to the emblem he was given earlier, though it turns out Kleo was wearing a bulletproof vest anyway. Luckily, it’s the thought that counts, and Sven’s attempt at heroic self-sacrifice earns him a smooch.
As it turns out, Kleo only burned a decoy. She had the real pact stuffed away.
The meaning of the recurring dream is also revealed – Kleo has a twin brother, Harald, who is a cosmonaut out in space. When he’s informed of Nikolai’s death, he announces his intention to return.
And, finally, it turns out Uwe is alive. That’s a lot of potential threads for a theoretical Season 3 to tug on should Netflix decide to renew Kleo, so it seems like the filmmakers have plenty of confidence in the story they’re telling.
