The first season of Kleo didn’t seem like it begged for a continuation. It left some things unresolved, sure, but in the world of partially fact-based international espionage, there’s really no logical endpoint. Someone is always spying on someone else, after all. But the second season does a much better job of teeing up multiple options for the story to take, and Kleo Season 3 suddenly seems pretty likely.
More to the point, it also seems pretty welcome.
Kleo, Meet Harald
Kleo’s familial drama has always been integral to the German Netflix series. Her grandfather and her estranged father have been villains; her mother rejected her at the end of Season 1 but then had a surprising turnaround in Season 2, only for her fate to fuel Kleo further.
The ending of Kleo Season 2 introduces a new family member, Harald, Kleo’s cosmonaut twin brother. For now, Kleo doesn’t even know Harald exists, and the audience wasn’t sure until the very end of the season, but the final scenes show him learning of Nikolai’s death and resolving to return to Earth.
This is the most obvious dramatic core to a potential Season 3, with Harald trying to enact revenge on his sister for the death of their father. Presumably, Kleo will not want to off another family member, so an arc exploring their relationship and eventually allowing them to realize that they have both been manipulated by the state would make for a logical throughline.
Uwe Is Still Alive
The Season 2 finale also revealed the unlikely survival of Uwe, whose deterioration throughout has turned him into a more unambiguous villain than Harald will probably be.
Uwe will likely function as a dangerous foil for Kleo who could potentially be an early ally for Harald, though it’s likely he’ll be a danger to everyone at some point.
Would Season 3 finally deliver him his ultimate – and permanent – fate? We’d like to think so.
Kleo Season 3 Could Introduce Even More Political Flux
The reunification of Germany following the Fall of the Berlin Wall will lack form a backdrop for further seasons since the political flux will morph a lot of agendas and fold new players into the plot.
It’s likely that the personal elements will still likely take pride of place, but the political backdrop will inform the events in new and (hopefully) unexpected ways.
At the time of writing, Kleo Season 3 has not been confirmed, but depending on the performance of the second season, it’s likely that Netflix will make a decision about renewal sooner rather than later.
