Summary
Episode 2 of Season 4 shapes the story well as the Hargeeves siblings quickly learn that their new lives are threatened.
The Umbrella Academy Season 4, Episode 2, is equally about the Hargreeves siblings getting accustomed to their powers being restored as the mission they have embarked on. Getting their powers back is no easy feat. For a start, it makes them feel nauseous, and secondly, they need to get accustomed to their powers being a little different. Klaus is an outlier in all this: he decided not to take the marigold and restore his powers due to being clean for a few years.
Ben doesn’t even care that he spiked his siblings; he believes they want their powers and questions whether they are happy with their lives. Personally, I did not like this venomous side of Ben—it’s easy for him to judge, but he did not even allow his siblings to have a choice in the matter.
Episode 2, “Jean and Gene,” is a good chapter as it continues to add mystery to The Keepers and their plans. Once the family realizes that Sy Grossman is not at his Dry Cleaning business, they decide to head to New Grumpson, Maine, after seeing a hint on a map that that’s where his daughter Jennifer is.
The first clue that this quaint town in Maine would be strange was that when I searched for New Grumpson, it did not exist (or Google’s search systems are still dire). Either way, it is an amusing road trip as the siblings struggle with their sickness. There’s a lot of vomit and stress and the repeat of “Baby Shark” on the stereo cassette.
New Grumpson Turns On The Umbrella Academy
At first, it looks like an innocent town, but then Five realizes that a man dressed as an elf will not stop looking at them. Suddenly, the entire town turns violent and shoots at the Hargreeves siblings. The family must quickly get accustomed to their powers to stave off their attackers.
During all the chaos, Five finds a strange subway station with weird symbols. He hops on one of the subs, which takes him back to the same place but in a different timeline—the same time and day.
This is a turning point in Season 4; the alternative superheroes cannot try to act normal forever, especially when there’s something afoot in their timeline.
Ben Accidentally Becomes Acquainted With Jennifer
Despite spiking his siblings, Ben is not interested in looking for Jennifer in New Grumpson, so he heads to a cafe. Despite being incredibly rude, he becomes acquainted with the cafe’s owner, Rosie, who turns out to be Jennifer later in the episode.
But with all the chaos happening around town, suddenly, the sheriff wants Jennifer to leave with him, but she chooses to run away with Ben instead.
Meanwhile, another woman claiming to be Jennifer heads to the van and asks Klaus for help, but the real Jennifer and Ben arrive with Diego and Lila. The imposter pretending to be Jennifer is working with the organization that runs the town and shoots Klaus in the chest before Ben can kill her.
Dr. Gene and Jean Thibodeau Serves As The Ending of a Mystery Filled Episode 2
More of the townspeople attack and shoot at Luther, Allison, and Viktor. Five arrives on the scene, now able to handle his teleportation and timeline-shifting powers. Eventually, Diego picks them all up in the van, concluding the never-ending waves of attacks.
But unfortunately, the ending of Episode 2 is a sorry one for Klaus. Because he is dying, his family has no option but to use the marigold on him to save his life and restore his powers. Whether he can remain sober now is a different question, but he at least does not die.
Episode 2 ends with more danger afoot — Jennifer is confused as to why the Hargreeves siblings believe that Sy Grossman is her father, but suddenly, their van is hit, and it rolls over. With the family barely conscious, Dr. Gene and Jean Thibodeau arrive on the scene and kidnap Jennifer.
Whatever Jennifer’s significance remains a mystery in Episode 2, but this chapter marvelously instills the mystery surrounding the new characters and The Keepers. The writers would have had more fun with this story if Netflix had not decided to end the series. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it so far.
More From Episode 2
Here are more interesting points from The Umbrella Academy Season 4, Episode 2 that may be important later:
- Diego thinks Lila is cheating on him and confides in Five. Five assures him she isn’t, as he knows Lila has only been working with him to figure out who The Keepers are.
- Viktor tells Allison that they are not friends.
- Luther sees a uniform labeled “Hargreeves Enterprises” in New Grumpson, indicating his father is behind Season 4’s conspiracy.
