Summary
The series progresses to its ultimate conclusion, with the final mysteries slowly unraveling nicely.
The Hargeeves siblings hardly had a great day out in New Grumpson, and in the process, they lost Jennifer too to the mysterious Jean and Gene from The Keepers. Episode 3 of The Umbrella Academy Season 4, titled “The Squid and the Girl,” is actually as the title suggests.
For a start, it opens in 1995: on the news, fishermen are reported to have captured a giant squid. In gross circumstances, a young girl emerges from the squid and responds to the startled reporters with “The Cleanse.” And interestingly and unsurprisingly, Reginald is in the background.
Episode 3 sees the group split up again after Five and Lila admit they have been spying on The Keepers. Plus, Klaus is furious with Allison for feeding him marigolds when he was almost dead. It’s back to the dysfunctional family theme, while this episode adds the most to the mystery so far.
Ben feels a strong connection to Jennifer
In Episode 3, Ben is his usual rebellious self as he ventures out and finds Jennifer on his own. Something powerful connects him to the woman, and his body suffers as powerful red energy moves through him.
Jennifer has her own problem to contend with, too. She’s in a farmhouse with Jena and Gene, and they have questions regarding “The Cleanse,” but she has no answers. She tries telling them that her whole life has been a lie. Jean and Gene show Jennifer proof that their world is the wrong timeline by showcasing different artifacts, but she’s terrified of the self-proclaimed doctors.
Playing on her terror and refusal to cooperate, Jean and Gene show Jennifer an enormous artifact that makes her even more scared. In Episode 3, this artifact is not clear.
Ben ends up crossing paths with Sy, who calls Jennifer special and says she is in grave danger. Sy reinforces the idea that Ben has a special connection with Jennifer and tells him to use his instincts. And so, with barely any resistance from Jean and Gene, apart from their flimsy security men, Ben saves her from the farmhouse.
But what’s more creepy about this whole ordeal is that Jean and Gene barely lift a finger — in fact, they dance. They have grander plans that go beyond chasing the people they want.
The Keepers HQ
Victor, Diego, and Five decide to head to the source of where their problems began — The Keepers’ HQ, which is Jean and Gene’s apartment. Diego looks through every room and finds a file referencing “The Umbrella Academy” on October 14th, 2006 — the day Ben died.
Diego goes down a rabbit hole and believes that whatever is happening with Jennifer has something to do with Ben, as the document also has “The Jennifer Incident” noted. Diego’s intuition is spot on here.
Five shows Lila the subway
Lila notices that Five will not blink, so he forces him to, which brings them both to teleporting in the same subway station that Five came across in New Grumpson. Every time he blinks, he ends up here.
Five shows Lila how the trains take them to different timelines. When they head on a train, the world has ended. It’s Five’s apocalypse — the one where Viktor blew up the moon. Someone shoots at them, so they escape (it looks like an alternative Five).
In these moments, it feels like a great shame this series is ending where it is. There’s so much potential to flesh out the intricacies of these timelines, but we find ourselves seeing a condensed version of the story.
Visiting Reginald
Allison, Viktor, and Luther take a different approach than the others and decide to visit their father, Reginald. This decision causes them some anxiety, especially Viktor, who wants to confront him and get a lot of anger off his chest.
When they reach Reginald’s mansion, they fully expect resistance, but they are escorted in with ease and are met by a blonde woman who is excited to see them. This blonde woman is Reginald’s wife, Abigail, in this timeline.
Reginald eventually joins the group, and he’s furious that 1) they have their powers back and 2) they’ve caused havoc in New Grumpson. He wants to know their plans and the whereabouts of Jennifer, who he is trying to protect.
But interestingly, Reginald tells the group that Jennifer has more power than all of them combined, foreshadowing what’s to come.
And then Diego, Five, and Lila arrive. Because of the information they found at The Keepers HQ, they want to talk about Ben. They are confused as to why they have no idea how Ben died in the other timeline, but they have been conditioned to believe they are all responsible.
Five puts it down to one thing—Reginald, in a different timeline, messed with their memories and erased the events surrounding Ben. Reginald believes he would have done something like that, especially in the 1960s, when many human experiments were conducted.
The group asks for their memories back, and with Reginald’s wife’s backing them, he agrees that they can use his technology.
Season 4, Episode 3 ends with Allison, Luther, and Viktor using the memory machine and about to embark on the truth about what happened to Ben.
More Moments From Episode 3
Here are more noteworthy moments from Episode 3 that may be important in future chapters:
- Diego accuses Lila of cheating, but she tells him that the man he saw her with was Five because they were spying on The Keepers. Later in the episode, Lila tells Diego they need a break to reassess their marriage.
- Klaus meets Quinn, and he owes him money. He asks Quinn to kill him, so the man shoots him in the head, but obviously that does not work. Klaus is slowly going off the rails again.
