Summary

Season 4 continues to charm the audience as a new mystery burdens our true crime podcasters.

Poor Charles — Only Murders in the Building Season 4, Episode 1 sees the famous podcaster experiencing a strange intuition when he returns to his apartment with Mabel and Oliver. Even Mabel momentarily sees blood spatter on the oven, but none of them notice that there’s a bullet hole in the window, causing a whistle from the wind.

But, as we learned at the end of Season 3, Sazz Pataki was murdered in this apartment, and it takes a while for the group to notice that there’s evidence in front of them that she’s dead.

Only Murders in the Building: The Movie

Overshadowing the grim reality of Sazz is the podcast itself. The finances have been pulled from it, and Oliver is freaking out that his career demise has finally arrived! But, he does not have to worry for long as Paramount Studios gets in touch about making a fictional movie about their podcast.

The podcasters meet Bev Melon and the Paramount executives in LA. What surprises them is how the movie is well into pre-production with the directors (who are twins) involved. Shooting is planned for a few weeks; they only need to sign the documents.

The pace is obviously alarming, and maybe this is a commentary on Hollywood’s insistence on moving ahead on projects quickly with little planning due to the rise of streaming services and the desperation to make a margin at the Box Office.

When it comes to salary talk, Mabel gets upset. She hates how they describe her as a character: homeless, mumbling. She does not want to be that person. She wants a different outlook on her life.

Despite salaries not being confirmed (there will be some juicy zeroes), the podcasters head to the “Only Murders in the Building movie” launch party, where they meet their counterparts. Here is a quick breakdown of who is cast as who:

  • Eva Longoria is playing Mabel.
  • Eugene Levy is playing Charles and;
  • Zach Galifianakis is playing Oliver

Despite having a famous actress play her, Mabel is still not happy with the script and provides Mel with a note with her demands, presumably salary numbers.

Sazz Pataki’s fate is revealed

It seemed like the group would never learn of Sazz’s fate, but Charles worried about his friend throughout the episode. Something seemed off with the text messages he received from her, and when they visited her rented place in Hollywood, something was off.

Eventually, Charles, Mabel, and Oliver return to New York, realizing they missed a few things at Charles’ apartment. They finally see the bullet hole in the window and the blood spatter on the oven. It dawns on Charles that the person messaging him is not Sazz.

The true crime podcasters head to the building incinerator and find Sazz Pataki’s metal shoulder joint concealed in the ashes.

And there you have it, folks, the mystery of Season 4 of Only Murders in the Building. Episode 1 is a bright start. This is a series that always seems to retain its charm.
