Summary
Things are going terribly for the Garveys in Bad Sisters Season 2. Episode 6 causes major fractures within the group and raises some big questions about certain key characters.
“Who By Water” is the obligatory episode of Bad Sisters where it all starts going badly wrong. Season 2 hasn’t exactly been smooth sailing thus far, but the Garveys have gotten away with most of it. Angelica’s presumed death is the catalyst for sending the entire clan into disarray in Episode 6, kick-starting a string of terrible decisions — and exposing some previous ones — as we inch closer and closer to the finale.
But my big question at the moment is about Ian. As we’ll see, he’s sounding some serious alarm bells. But more on that in due course. In the meantime, a terrible decision by Fergal has put the Garda in a difficult position, Becka’s personal life is falling apart, and with the disarray, the sisters are missing the most surefire supporting figures in their lives — each other.
Covering Tracks
A big part of “Who By Water” is the aftermath of what happened to Angelica aboard the boat. Everyone’s already panicked, and that’s before Eva reveals that she told Fergal about Angelica blackmailing Grace. Now they have a motive for murdering Angelica at exactly the same time she has suddenly disappeared.
Ian volunteers to help the sisters cover their tracks, so he heads down to the marina and discovers blood on the boat and a security camera on a nearby house with a clear view of the crime scene. Charming the nice old lady who lives there, he’s able to get in and erase the footage (or at least transfer some of it — it’s a little unclear), and the ladies clean up the blood from the vessel. All clear? Not quite.
When Bibi turns up some car keys in Angelica’s bag, she realizes too late that she must have parked at the marina. Before she can find the vehicle, the police get there. It’s obvious — at least to Houlihan; more on her in a minute — that Angelica was doing something at the marina and hasn’t been seen since. The net is tightening.
What’s Houlihan’s Deal?
I can’t stand Houlihan. I don’t know if it’s the writing or the performance, but there’s something weirdly off-putting about the obvious excitement she feels about pinning something on the Garveys. Now, don’t get me wrong, I understand that the police are supposed to want to catch criminals, but there’s a perverse sense of giddy obsession to Houlihan that really irks me.
Even Fergal isn’t immune from her pressure. To be fair, Fergal has stolen a thick wad of Grace’s cash to cover the legal fees in his child custody gambit, which is very much a crime, but for whatever reason I was siding with him when he snapped at her for overstepping. Nobody likes a tell-tale, do they?
I reckon she’s right about Ian though. Speaking of which…
What Is Going On With Ian?
Is this guy a psycho? I’m honestly asking. His threatening Angelica was the first clue. But his approach to the Eva situation is genuinely bonkers, especially here in Bad Sisters Season 2, Episode 6.
Ian has no shame whatsoever about flagrantly pursuing Eva, which is weird to start with. Bibi notices some intimacy between them immediately, and when she eviscerates Eva about it, Ian sees that as his opportunity to pounce. He manages to get Eva into bed and is pleased as punch when Becka and then Bibi see them together. He even makes a big song and dance about putting his arm around Eva and staring across the road at Bibi, knowing she’s looking.
But this isn’t all. He’s unreasonably aggressive to Roger when he comes asking about Angelica, and he says a remarkable thing to Eva about how she has been in a relationship with her couch and TV remote for too long and should move on. It’s like he has totally forgotten that his wife — Eva’s sister! — just died. It’s all extremely bizarre.
And both Bibi and Houlihan are onto him. There’s something mysterious about his past that he hasn’t revealed to anyone; his entire existence seems to have sprung into being a year ago, and there’s basically no trace of him ever existing prior to that. But if that’s the case, what is his endgame? And why is Eva so integral to it?
Becka’s Scare
Becka has a brief health scare in this episode when she notices blood in her urine. Luckily, the baby’s fine, but her personal life remains a mess, and it has been made deliberately unclear whether Matt or Joe is the father.
It’s clear that Becka herself would prefer Matt. But Joe doesn’t take the news well when Eva accidentally reveals it, which is understandable. His determined hatred of Matt’s music remains very funny, and he’s quite sure that Becka’s baby is his, but what if he’s the father? It all seems like a big mess to me, and it’s probably the least of the problems the Garveys are dealing with. Can things get worse? Will they? There are two episodes left, so I’d imagine so.
