Summary

I will watch this movie every year without fail, but I believe it is higher on the top 10 Christmas movie list for others than for me.

Narrator: If you’re a Dr. Seuss fan or just love the movies, The Grinch is a tale you simply must see. I attempted a sentence like Dr. Suess – I think I’ll retire now.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas is a live-action movie based on the 1957 Dr. Suess book.

The plot presents the audience with the backstory of how The Grinch became resentful, angry, and lonely, ultimately leading to stealing Christmas joy and presents from Whoville. This festive movie has many reasons for being one of the most enjoyable Christmas movies for both old and new fans to watch every year.

Firstly, Ron Howard (Solo: A Star Wars Story, Cinderella Man) created a wonderful environment for Whoville, from using a variety of popping colors to creative and coo-coo set pieces. Howard truly set the scene for this frantic and Suess-like world.

I suspect that Howard has successfully depicted Dr. Suess’s world and the character of The Grinch. However, this is simply a note from someone who can only use her imagination, as I have not experienced the 1957 book.

Speaking of renditions of The Grinch, Jim Carrey delivers a phenomenal yet expected performance. Carrey always brings laughter to his movies; this is one of his funniest.

I would be so biased as to say that it is HE who continues to attract new fans year after year.

Additionally, a quality that Carrey can deliver is relatability—for aging fans like myself, as we watch the movie year after year, we begin to feel more connected to the character’s introversion and grumpiness.

“Am I just eating because I’m bored?”
(Can I get an AMEN if you’re as guilty as me of this?)

“I tell you Max, I don’t know why I ever leave this place. I’ve got all the company I need right here.”
(The Grinch says in the introverted nature of his own home – all too relatable the older I get)

And lest we not forget one of the most relatable scenes of all, The Grinch is having himself a little fashion show, getting ready to go out—trying to be sophisticated and sexy—but inevitably gives up and states, “That’s it, I’m not going!” A feeling we women know ALL too well.

that's it i'm not going grinch

‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’

Though Carrey steals the show for How the Grinch Stole Christmas, that is not to say that he lacked a high-performing and supportive cast.

Cindy Lou Who (Taylor Momsen), Martha May Whovier (Christine Baranski), May Who (Jeffery Tambor), and many more were a classical and grand addition to this cast. Momsen and Baranski personally delivered divine performances. Momsen brought innocence and adorableness, while Baranski brought the flirtatious diva energy I know her from (especially from Mamma Mia)

We are met with another pawfect character – Max The Dog- who is close to Carrey’s performance. He is utterly adorable. Any movie with a dog is a win, as long as they don’t die. I wouldn’t say I like movies that do that – John Wick, I’m looking at you.

Whether you’re a Dr. Suess fan, a Jim Carrey fan, or enjoy Christmas movies, there will be something in this for you. From the important themes, the colorful backdrops and costumes, the sweet and crazy design, and the fun head-bobbing music, I promise you won’t only not be disappointed. You may also add this movie to your recurring Christmas movie watch list for every year to come.
