Summary
Season 4, Episode 3 delivers quirky breakthroughs and heartfelt revelations amid uneven character arcs, making for an engaging but imperfect installment.
While these characters gain little from their quest for purpose in Mythic Quest Season 4, Episode 3, they at least try.
“Breakthrough” begins with Poppy and Carol using the usual excuses to take a day off work despite David and Ian’s attempts to convince them to come in. But in reality, both women are enjoying time with their lovers.
Poppy finds being with Storm easy
It’s abundantly clear that Poppy and Storm are enjoying their sex life, and Poppy uses it to get out of Ian’s Warriors Within Day, where he helps his colleagues find their true purpose. Poppy still wants to work, but Storm is concerned about her workaholic tendencies.
Listening to Storm’s advice to relax, Poppy decides to have a “bed day” without using her laptop at all.
What follows is the kind of experience that new love entails. They order pizza in bed, and the day flies by. Poppy and Storm manage to have an entire day in bed together, and Poppy cannot believe how easy it is to do the simplest things with Storm.
However, Storm wonders why Poppy mentions Ian so often and if they used to be an item.
Poppy seems to lack self-awareness, making the audience wonder how this will eventually explode.
Warriors Within Day
Jo and David want to discover their true purpose, so Ian introduces them to Warriors Within Day. First, they go to a steelmaker factory, where Ian asks them to create any weapon they want.
Jo’s choice of weapon is a small dagger, and Ian tells her it’s because she likes to go rogue and kill unnoticed. David picks a breastplate, so Ian suggests that he’s afraid to get hurt (actually, he says he’s a vagina that’s afraid to take a pounding, but we get the gist).
Next, in true outlandish style, Ian takes them both to the beach on horses. He explains that now they are nearing their true purpose; they must head into the ocean and emerge reborn. Jo is “all in” on the mission and heads in, but David hesitates.
To David’s surprise, Ian takes off all his clothes and asks David to do the same. Ian is surprised to see that David has an erection, though, making the whole ordeal awkward (and hilarious).
Ian brings up Poppy again, and David highlights his colleagues’ obsession. Before they can delve into this further, they realize Jo has not emerged from the water. She cannot swim, so they go into the water to save her.
At this point, it’s conclusive that Ian is in denial about his feelings for Popp and suppressing them far too much.
Brad gives Dana and Rachel a financial lesson
Brad is appalled at Rachel and Dana’s money management. He reviews their finances and highlights their embarrassing purchases to make his point. This leads to the women arguing, and Brad suggests they break up to solve their spiraling debt.
To convince them both to break up, Brad asks older colleagues about their failed finances and lifestyle to scare Dana and Rachel, but it does the opposite. Rachel and Dana decide to plan to buy an apartment instead.
I have no idea how Brad’s financial check-up got them here, but at least Rachel and Dana did not break up.
“Breakthrough” ends with some hurtful truths
The next day, Jo tells Ian and David that when she nearly drowned, she knew her purpose was to be an assistant. She’s gone full circle, back to square one.
David also had a revelation after seeing Jo’s near-death experience. He realized he lives in constant fear and decided to let down his guard and allow rejection moving forward. He immediately applied his new rules and asked Ian if he wanted to go out for dinner with him. Ian expressed that he likes David, but not as a friend (which is super confusing for David but hilarious at the same time).
Looks like David will be back to being fearful again.
After her romantic day off, Poppy is back in the office, and Ian cannot wait to talk to her. To his surprise, Poppy had her revelation during her entire day in bed. She tells him that Storm brings out the best in her. Seeing this hurt Ian, she clarifies that he does, too, but in different ways.
Poppy notices that Ian is developing rashes from stress. These two characters need to talk quickly before Ian has a breakdown.
The complicated love story continues in Season 4, Episode 3 of Mythic Quest, with no end in sight, despite profound revelations for the characters.
