Tyler Perry Studios shows no signs of slowing down. Duplicity, an upcoming legal thriller, will premiere on Prime Video on March 20, 2025. This marks the first Tyler Perry film production of 2025, following three major releases on streaming platforms in 2024.
The plot follows Marley, a powerful attorney who must confront a highly personal case investigating the shooting of her best friend Fela’s husband. Marley collaborates with her boyfriend Tony, a former investigator, to crack the case and uncover the truth.
Given Perry’s involvement, expect significant themes of justice, trust, betrayal, and plenty of drama. Whether critics will appreciate it is another matter. However, since it’s a Tyler Perry film, his fans will be excitedly anticipating it.

Tyler Perry’s Brand Continues To Grow
After expanding the studio in 2021, Tyler Perry proudly holds one of the largest film studios in the United States. 2024 was a big year for the director, producer, and actor as three of his films were released on Netflix and Prime Video:
The Six Triple Eight
Released on December 6, 2024, and then on Netflix on December 20, The Six Triple Eight focuses on the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, an all-Black, all-female battalion during World War II.
Even with Kerry Washington (American Son) in the lead role, the film received a critical score of only 54% on Rotten Tomatoes, though audiences responded more positively, with a score of 72%.
Divorce in the Black
Perry’s second film of 2024, Divorce in the Black, starring Meagan Good (Shazam!, Harlem, The Intruder) was released on Prime Video in July. In it, Ava, a young bank professional, is devastated when her husband abandons their marriage. She’s determined to fight until fate intervenes, revealing the wicked deeds that once upon a time sabotaged Ava’s destiny to connect with her soulmate.
Our review was far from impressed, giving it nearly the lowest score of 1.5-star, saying:
Through no fault of Meagan Good’s, who delivers a committed performance in spite of the movie around her, Tyler Perry’s Divorce in the Black is laughably terrible garbage.
Critics on Rotten Tomatoes agreed. It still has a rating of 0% on the Tomatometer (21 February 2025). However, the audience responded positively, with 73%.
Mea Culpa
With Kelly Rowland taking on the leading role, Mea Culpa was released on Netflix in February 2024. In it, a defense attorney chooses to defy her family by representing an artist accused of murdering his girlfriend.
Again, the critics panned it, giving it 18% on Rotten Tomatoes, and even the audiences did not warm to this one, giving it 37%.
Like most of Tyler Perry’s contributions, his movie slate is loved or hated. Critics and audiences are usually at odds with his movie industry offerings.
You may also remember his first three Netflix films, which were released between 2020 and 2022: A Fall from Grace, A Madea Homecoming, and A Jazzman’s Blues.
Perry’s fans remain loyal to his films regardless of whether they love or hate them. Will Duplicity achieve a good score among critics? I wouldn’t count on it.
