WARNING: THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS MAJOR SPOILERS

We’ve finally got a humdinger five episodes in – it’s messy. You Season 5, Episode 5 is the messiest one yet. The juiciest one yet. My goodness.

Joe and Kate (+ small extras)

At the beginning of Season 5, Episode 5, we are immediately informed that Kate is investigating Joe’s past. She asked Cynthia to give her all the information she had previously requested, but later turned her away.

Kate informs Teddy of all that she knows about Joe. She finds out about Marienne and the affair Joe had with her, not long after “Love Quinn supposedly killed herself.” Then Teddy confronts Kate again. He asks her about Teddy. Kate’s silence tells him everything. But she doesn’t tell Teddy (YET) that she was involved too, which makes her a liability.

Kate visits Reagan’s house, but she catches Maddie off guard. She is being herself at this moment in time. Confused and panicked, she asks Kate to leave. But Kate insists on seeing Reagan. So Maddie runs upstairs to “get Reagan” and locks herself in the bathroom while talking to Kate through the door as Maddie and Reagan. Eventually, Maddie ends up in a mental breakdown, conversing with herself and Reagan in the mirror (A SPECTACULAR PERFORMANCE BY ANNA CAMP.)

Kate finds a key to get into the bathroom. Maddie tells Kate EVERYTHING! But she also tells her how life is better now because of it. Kate comforts Maddie.

Later on in the episode, Joe and Kate get into a heated argument after Henry finds a hunting knife under Kate’s pillow. Joe confronts her. Kate tells him that she knows what he’s done and that she also believes he was the one who killed Beck. He gaslights her. But NINJA STAR – then Kate brings up Bronte and tells Joe to gaslight her about that too – but he doesn’t deny it. He pins onto her by telling her it’s because as soon as Kate saw his real heart, she took hers away once she’d stopped using it for her benefit (in Joe’s head).

Joe picks up the knife and tells Kate to stab him if this is all that she thinks of him. And you can see the temptation in her heart by the Freudian biting of her lip. Kate also has these tendencies for survival, but she is trying to fight against them. Joe presses her.

And that’s when she says the divorce will be amicable for Henry’s sake. But Kate then also asks Joe not to take Henry from her.

After that, Joe goes on a little hunt, but before I explain that, let’s rewind.

Joe and Bronte

The opening scene shows Joe and Bronte lying in bed together after having sex. They are eating Chinese food and reading over Joe’s writing. Joe is falling increasingly in love with Bronte and desires her to open her heart to him more. He’s yearning for her and extremely unhappy in his marriage.

The following day (I’m guessing?) Bronte is acting suspicious with her phone, and Joe thinks she’s hiding something from him. He sees it as her not trusting him! So what does Joe do? A BIG ASS GRAND-JOE-GESTURE. He orders her food, a massage, and inspires her to write more, which she does.

Again, the following day, she leaves the writing on the office table in Mooney’s for him to read. It’s kink writing. Joe finally feels like he understands her now. They talk, and then start the BDSM kink play. However, Bronte gets thrown off and backs off. This confuses Joe. Again, the next day, Bronte leaves Joe a letter confessing that she’s leaving town. He panics, and the hunt begins.

After Kate mentioned the divorce, Joe sprang into high gear about finding Bronte. He broke into Clayton’s apartment, assuming he’d kidnapped her and that he had to save her. Bronte later rings Joe and tells her not to worry about her. Joe calls back and asks for the address of the diner that Bronte just called from.

Joe has an address for the diner. He speaks to the employer. He gets an address for the house where Bronte is. He walks in. She tasers him. They talk. They fuck. There’s a domestic going on downstairs. Clayton punches Joe. Clayton pushes Bronte.

JOE KILLS CLAYTON.

After Joe kills Clayton, two people walk into the room while on Instagram Live, and one exclaims to the world that Joe Goldberg has just killed their friend Clayton.

The lady holding the phone says, “WE GOT HIM, LOUISE,” while looking at “Bronte” – LOUISE IS HOLDING A GUN TO JOE.

“Did you set me up? – “Did you catfish me?”
