WARNING: THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS MAJOR SPOILERS

“Hello, You.” We’re back where it all started? I’m sure you remember my time in New York with Beck. I certainly do. The ghost of her still lives here. In my mind. In Mooney’s bookstore. What better way to end this than where it all began?

It’s been three years since Joe Goldberg’s last kill. Shocking, I know. His new relationship with Kate has kept his urges at bay, but for how long? What will be the thing that breaks the camel’s back this time? We open Season 5 with some (in my opinion) boring explanation of Kate’s company and the different people involved.

Joe and Kate have been living the Modern Day Power Couple life, doused in fame and adoration by the media (though I don’t personally remember/understand how Kate has made this possible for them, but whatever.) In addition to this life of seemingly untouchable fame, Kate worked some of her magical influence and brought Henry, Joe, and Love’s child back home to him.

As we creep into the body of Episode 1 of Season 5, Kate is met with a threat. Kate admitted to Joe in Season 4 that her company killed children to implement a new pipeline (don’t ask me what this means.) Kate assumed nobody knew her dirty little secret.

However, Season 5 shows that someone knew, and that someone is now ready to scream from the rooftops about what happened. But who is it?

Well, the answer doesn’t take long to come out. Joe snoops on Kate’s sister’s phone and figures it out immediately. Super duper easy peasy lemony squeezy. Afterwards, we are met with scenes where we see Joe snapping and killing Uncle Bob, the man who wants to ruin Kate. Simultaneously, Kate snaps out of her sleep, feels that Joe has disappeared, and checks her phone for his location. Joe is back at Mooney’s Bookstore. While Joe is killing Bob, Kate gets up, goes to the store, creeps inside, and opens the door.

Joe is sitting at his typewriter. Joe never killed Bob. Joe wrote about killing Bob in a fantasy murder novel. This confused the daylight out of me, can I add. Nonetheless, the threat is happening, but Joe hasn’t yet killed Bob as the episode suggests.

Furious, confused, and unbelieving, Kate takes a trip to Uncle Bob’s little shack to confront him. He confesses to everything. His plans for the article, his plans to remove her, his plans to finish her – and here’s where he throws the nuclear bomb – if she tries to stop him, he will joyfully leak that she killed Rhys from Season 4. He had her investigated and easily found out Kate and Joe’s secret. And he also called Joe a simp (a bit rude if you ask me!)

It’s him vs us. Unexpectedly, Kate tells Joe to do what he does best, despite how proud she is of him for not killing for so long. So, Bob’s your uncle, Fanny’s your aunt (I’m sure that’s how the expression goes.) Joe kills Bob. However, I doubt this will be as straightforward as the expression conveys.

Side story: We are formally introduced to “Bronte,” the book thief. (We say “Bronte” because they both know she is using a fake name—a little suspicious, but Joe just accepts it—weird but okay.)

As Joe finds himself back in Mooney’s Bookstore, he feels the ghosts of his past. However, eventually, he realises that he has his ghosts in there, but there’s also someone else in the building. Joe sees himself in this new character and doesn’t know how he could possibly turn her away—just as Mooney didn’t turn him away. Let’s see how this storyline progresses, shall we?

We wrap up episode one (again) with Joe accepting his Dark Passenger (little Dexter reference there). He brings the old and new together. “It’s all just You.”
